Been a while waiting for new gearbox rebuild kit and then back over to geelong for several weeks.

Pulled the box out this morning via the front seat (that’s a really crappy job taking the seat out).

Clear signs of problem in the transfer case and the thrust washers have been eaten.

    Found the culprit

This bearing is toast there was huge lateral play. Not sure the cause, I have a feeling it was the bearing at the other end of the shaft, that was an aftermarket one and looks as though there was too much end float.

Still, caught early, no major damage.

I’ve bought a complete genuine rebuild kit using parts sourced mainly from Blanchard, as the box is out, it’s getting fully rebuilt…. Again.

Gearbox rebuild continues…slowly. Rebuilding a landy gearbox is only a few hours work, but it quickly turns into weeks when you have to keep ordering bits.

The transfer box is done, the problem was traced to the front output bearing. Forgot to take pic before I put the new one in, but the issue was that the cheap pattern bearing was narrower and as a result there was too much end float that couldn’t be absorbed by the speedo housing.

    So that is done.

Next problem was the gearbox, back on the first rebuild I had huge issues with the rear Layshaft bearing. The replacements were too tight when pressed onto the Layshaft. I decided while the box was out to address this for peace of mind…. After fitting a new genuine bearing it was still too tight so came to conclusion that the problem is in the shaft.

    This arrived today…

    How cool is that.

    Rebuilding Sid

    It’s not cool, doesn’t fit.

I had a problem…. The old layshaft had the split ring but the large diameter front lay shaft bearing.

That’s sort of one end from an early suffix A and the other end from a suffix B/C.

The new layshaft was a suffix A (split ring) shaft, but then won’t fit the bell housing (small layshaft bearing end)

I gave in and cracked open the spare box I have been saving and pulled the layshaft from that. Non-split ring, fat layshaft bearing. Fits perfectly.

Unless there is a halfway shaft not shown in the parts catalogue. I think I someone may have machined a grove in a late model shaft, and swapped a heap of other parts. Who knows.

    Still
    Ta….da……

Old layshaft was squished hence why bearings didn’t fit, probably when the muppet machined it.

All sorted, took Sid for a short then long test run this afternoon and he’s a different truck. Gearbox is tight and quiet, not clanking or overrun noise. Far more drivable as well.

Put the box back in in two parts which meant no crane and easy access to all the bits. It’s a bit tense putting the intermediate gear in the transfer box with the prospect of letting it slip and getting a face full of metal. All smooth though..

Pain of a job but essential… now to use him for a few months.

Other plans though for the spring will be changing tyres to 7.5’s, i,saw a few restored 2A’s at a car show and they look much better. Also thinking new springs in the rear. I’m sure Sid was a site breakdown truck and compared to other LWB I’ve seen , he sits s a lot higher. And bounces a lot. Wondering if he has uprated springs.

From memory (and hopefully JDNSW will come along soon and confirm this) - there are standard and heavy duty springs. I think that the HD ones just have more leaf’s.

    Never ending….

Took Sid out for coffee run this morning and the gear stick snapped off as i I was reversing out of a parking area. Leaving Sid wedged, unable to reverse further and impossible to get into any forward gear or neutral.

    Fortunately it was quiet

Had to walk home for tools to strip the tunnel and gear stick assembly off so I could manually select a gear and get him home.

That gear stick was brand new britpart

I’d only fitted it was the old one had been welded.

There are quite a few rear springs for LWB Series 2/2a/3, all of which are "sort of" interchangeable - same length, width, and eyes.

Firstly, note that right and left springs are not the same - right has more set than left. This applies to all of them, but not some aftermarket ones.

There are standard springs, heavy duty (more leaves) and station wagon springs, which are dual rate, with the bottom two leaves very thick, straight and with the ends of the next leaf folded over so that these two leaves only come into play at heavy loads, giving a good ride with light loads.

Some time during Series 3 production, the thickness metal used in the springs became unavailable and all springs got fewer, thicker leaves.

And then there are springs for the One Ton.
