    Weird noises from front hubs

    Hi All,

Having only "finished' my S2A restoration a few months ago, and then immediately relocating from QLD to TAS, I haven't had a lot of road time with the vehicle. But before I go too much further with the vehicle, I need to sus out a possible front hub issue.

Before trucking the vehicle from QLD to TAS in June, I did drive it from Gold Coast to Beenleigh to See Harry (Series Land Rover Rescue), a round trip of about 80 klms, and at that time, there were no issues with it. I remember checking all hubs then by putting my hand on them, and only slightly warm.

So, then I put it on a transported truck and sent it to TAS.....

I picked it up from Hobart transport depot, and drove it about 40 klms to another forum members house, where it sat for a couple of months outside in the cold of winter Then in September, I moved it to my new house (approx 15 klms), and I noticed some oil/grease splatter on the outside of the front right wheel rim, and a quick check of swivel oil level tells me that the splatter is indeed swivel oil. So I topped it up, hoping for the best. I must say I didn't check the left side, but I wil do that as well.

Anyway, today I took the vehicle for a 10 klm round trip to get my TAS registration, and I left the free wheel hubs disengaged. I noticed a whistle / whining sound (almost like the old finger on the wine glass sound) that seemingly was coming from the front wheels. When I got home I checked the hub temperature, and it's completely cold, so it would appear to not be a bearing issue.

Could this be that the new hub seals (kelpro double lip) I installed aren't doing their job ? Is it something to do with the temperature difference between QLD and TAS ???

I didn't really want to pull the hub(s) apart until I get some guidance from other forum members.

So any suggestions about what to check next or what the issue might be would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    John

Hi. If the free wheel hubs are Selectros, it could be the split pin securing the castle nut on the end of the axle. It may be rubbing on the cap of the Selectro. It is easy to remove to check if this is the case. Not sure it would make that kind of noise though.

    Good luck, Jason

Hi Jason, they are selectros, I guess I could engage the hubs and drive it, would that stop the rubbing ?

    Thanks

With the hubs engaged the cap and axle turn together, so no rubbing. Disengaged, the axle and split pin stay still while the hub rotates.

Just to clarify, I was referring to the old style Selectros (where the cap is secured with 3 Phillips head set screws).

Thanks Jason, mine are Selectro Mile Marker, bought as new old stock, so I'm not sure if that means they're an old model or not ,so I'll check the screws.

    Cheers,

Despite that, I think your theory is still sound.

I'll take a closer look at this on the weekend.

I just keep wondering why the oil is coming out as well.

    Cheers,

So, I went for a drive with hubs engaged on the weekend, and I still get a weird whistling/whining sound seemingly coming from the front when moving, so I am still suspecting the hubs despite them running cool as.

    Any thoughts from anyone ?

    Thanks
    John

wonder if one of the springs has come off in the brakes or some thing loose in the drum.

My guess is foreign material (rust, dirt) inside the brake drums, including in the groove that the backing plate fits closely into. I suggest pulling the drums to have a look - not too big a job.

If it makes the same noise with the hub engaged as disengaged, this counts the hubs out. Have you tried jacking a wheel up and spinning it to see if you can trace the noise?
