    Painting sequence

I had an exciting time driving the chassis around the paddocks yesterday- and only one small leak afterwards - will have to work that one out. Otherwise I couldn’t be happier.

Now to painting and panel prep.
I have taken the gal capping off and will send it away as soon as I can (not sure when that will be).
I want to prepare the tub and doors and then paint in the meanwhile and put the caps on when I get them back. Has anyone done it this way round, or is it always like the factory and assembled the panel with the caps and then mask and paint? Any pitfalls await?

Thanks for that - it may end up what I do. Any complications?

Only complication was when I sent my galv bits to be re galv, I sent hingec latches for the seat boxes , they have an alum hinge pin so only got 1/2 the latches back , the other 1/2 was lost in the pot. I always asked that they didn't cut the bits off the hanging wires & told them I would dress the galv . For two reasons 1st that way they would not loose anything 2nd they use air grinders to dress & cann be a little heavy handed & gring through the galy. The best thing for dressing is a body file , then finish with a smooth file. If there are bits that do not gav propely you can buy zink sticks to do repairs. You heat up area to be repaired then wire brush it heat again & use the zinc stick like solder , then work it in using the wire brush. ( it will stuff up the wire brush ) then give it a lite coat of spray aluminum colour to blend into the galv.
Refitting the capping I made up a G clamp type tool to crush the alum rivets, could use it on all bar two.

Thanks for the detailed info. I’ll start by chatting to the galvanisers and see what they say and I always do my own cleanup.
The G clamp is interesting - I had intended to use an air chisel (modified) with a low pressure. Should be OK.

Can I ask where you sent your capping for galvanising? All mine needs doing and I'm having trouble finding somewhere here in Melbourne that will take it.

    Cheers,

    Hi Adam
I found GB Galvanising in Dandenong open and working - I’m just having a problem of getting my stuff there (280k’s) and not able to legally travel.

I tried a air chisel with a modified shaft to fit the head of the rivet , but found it slow & very hard holding the dolly under the capping on the rivet shaft. Using this tool i did them all in a morning.

Thanks - that really is food for thought. I have a BIG C clamp I can easily repurpose.
