If the starter motor is poling this will give the same symptoms as a flat battery or bad connection, including the solenoid sound effects. If you persist, it will also provide a distinctive smell of burning wire varnish.

    Welcome JbL

Be careful when sliding the Armature back in, that you have lifted the brushes out of the way of the commutator or you could snap them & then you'll be back where you started but without the Poo Bear noise. While apart I suggest you fit new Brushes as a precaution, & ensure they slide effortlessly in their guides.

    Here endeth the first lesson.

Thanks 4bee, I think I'll take it off the motor and take the whole unit to the auto elec for servicing.

If you are unsure of your mechanical abilities then that is probably the best thing to do, but don't let this experience go to waste but try & elicit as much knowledge as you can from the repairers as you go along, for future reference. This applies to any further repairs on your Rover. You can always come here for advice & opinions.

No, I don't mean SA as you probably wouldn't get in & I see one bloke already has tried to fly in over the last day or so & because he didn't qualify for entry he was on the next plane back to Vic, & bugger me dead he was stopped once again at the SA/Vic Road block trying the same stunt some hours later. The cops sent him on his way back to Vic but just as a generous bonus, courtesy of SAPOL he will be charged with several offences.
