Some had both holes, some had only one, but I don't think that they were for any particular Series, but were made as a dual purpose bell housing from time to time when they were uncertain about the relative numbers of RHD and LHD that would be built. Similarly, there are a small number of chassis fitted for both left and right hand drive, the obvious difference being two holes for the relay.
I should point out that although Series 1 had the same hole for the clutch fork shaft as Series 2a, it has the same bolt pattern as the six cylinder 2a, as do early production Series 2a 88 models which had the Series 1 engine.
