    Bonnet gap

I have been fitting the mudguards and bonnet today - and have run into a quandary.
It doesn’t matter how I adjust the striker on the bonnet I just can’t seem to get the bonnet to close onto the radiator panel. There is about a 12mm gap.
I had to replace the steel radiators panel as mine was rusted out and I was wondering if there were different models and heights?
Any other traps for young players?

    Hi Ricrose.
looks like its only on the first click, on the pin, on the bonnet.
They are adjustable. Have a lock nut.
On the S3 's, the radiator panel is taller with the deluxe bonnet, over the razor edge one.
    Yours looks like adjustment.

Thanks for that - does the catch look correct? I can’t see how else to mount it.
I presume all the adjustment is on the bonnet striker (pin).

    Hi Ricrose.
I had my striker plate firm, but it could move, when I closed my bonnet.
That way it aligned its self with the striker pin, which on a fixed vertical thread. I then tightened in closed position.
Take off the striker plate. does the bonnet close flush. that way you can work out if something under the bonnet is stopping it , or pin adjustment.

    Thanks again
I’ll give it a go first thing in the morning- I have put chalk on the high parts of the air cleaner etc to see if they are stopping the bonnet from closing and fortunately it is all clear.

I would say it is adjustment on the striker pin. This is adjustable with a locknut.

A note on bonnets. The standard bonnet, as seen above, comes in two varieties, either four bolt hinges or three bolt hinges. They are interchangeable, the only significant difference being the extra hole, and the three holes are in exactly the same places as three of the four holes for the earlier hinges or the three holes for the totally different S3 hinge. They come either with or without the spare wheel mount. Series 2/2a military bonnets are the standard one fitted with an over centre clip each side.

The Deluxe bonnet is fully interchangeable, and is distinguished by a rounded nose that protrudes in front of the radiator support panel. It comes in either a plain form, or one with a recess for a spare tyre. Either version may be equipped with a spare wheel mount.

The deluxe bonnet was optional on all models, but supposed to be standard on lwb from Series 2a on. But you could opt for standard bonnet, however, and the Australian army did.

And the usual rider - the bonnet it has now may or may not be the one it left the factory with. Bonnets are not easily damaged in accidents, so a lot of them last beyond their first vehicle, but the frames are subject to rust, and diesels to fretting and loosening of rivets.

You may have the pin adjusted too tight. You would think by screwing the pin in would pull the bonnet down more but that is not the case you need to screw the pin out to allow the pin to enter the second catch.

Thanks guys - the advice was, as usual, perfect. I started by proving it could close without striking anything on the motor and then sorted the adjustment.
    Thanks again.
