    First proper test drive

Had a really great afternoon- finally got to take the Landy out for her first test drive.
Could not be happier - all works as it should, only small things to sort - going to drain the oil from the steering box and pump grease in. Small annoying oil trail that I need gone before
roadworthy. Unfortunately I will have to wait for the shutdown in Vic to end before I can book it in as I’m going for club rego and they are not operating at the moment.
Next week start on the canvas tilt - let’s see how it all pulls together.
To all those who have given advice along the way - thanks!

I'm not sure that's a good idea unless you intend to fix it properly after the roadworthy.
Grease will get displaced and there will be little lubrication once it's moved out of the way of the ball bearings.
Similar situation with the steering relay, no ball bearings but the grease gets displaced and the Tufnol bushes don't get much lubrication.

I've just fixed a steering box leak on my FFR. It's just an O-ring that needs replacing around the shaft but unfortunately you need to remove the shaft to do the job. There is also a gasket to replace.
    Here's one I did a while back 2a GS Refurb ARN 178-334

I haven't tried to do it in situ but if you're careful it could be done once the arm has been pulled off. Just a bit fiddly getting it back together then you need to adjust the backlash with the adjuster on the cover plate.

I have an O-ring I could post to you but no spare gaskets.

    Vehicle looks great.

You mention Club Permit and not operating at the moment, is that the Club you are joining isn't operating ? My young bloke got a roady on his '97 Disco on Monday and visited VicRoads today to get it checked and pay rego. VicRoads working as normal.

Thanks Colin for the offer of an o ring. I’m not going to do the steering box just yet - perhaps next winter.
I have been a member of a club for many years, it’s just they have suspended doing new club permits while in lockdown.
I still have plenty to do for the next few weeks.

Nice Land Rover , I would be putting one shot in instead of grease , that way the mating surfaces won't wipe the grease away , it is runny enough to flow but thick enough to not leak.

Looking at the comments and doing a bit of digging I came up with this - to keep me going until I pull the steering box out next year.
Anyone have any experience with it?

Certainly Penrite is a great brand.

    I'd do it in situ.
Shouldn't be a big job whereas removing the steering box is more time consuming.

Remove the mud shields, remove the arm from the steering box mainshaft ( modify a cheap drop arm puller), remove the cover plate from the steering box and withdraw the shaft.

Use an O-ring pick tool to remove the old O- ring, fit the new one and re-assemble.

I can send some more pictures if you need them.

This looks amazing makes me want to pull the roof of mine again, I used the same one shot they sell for swivel balls in my steering box.
Spare in the back makes opening the bonnet a lot easier.

Convinced - I’ll give it a go Colin. What about gaskets etc? Will the ball bearings be a problem?
    Cheers.

    Thanks Paul
Have never made it to Ben River in the past year or so - was in Cape Conran just before lockdown - burnt out right to the waterline.
Drop me a PM if you are heading Metung way.
