That does look a good buy (depending what you paid, of course). Which engine?
The wood bearers under the tray are typical for a flatbed installation of that date (around 1970). The tray would have been installed probably by the dealer. I don't think Rover Australia supplied them until a few years later.

When my father fitted a tray on his 30CWT Commer truck, he used a timber beam conforming to the shape of the chassis, just like the one in the photo.
That would have been in the late 50s and it seems to me that pretty much every truck I saw around that time used the same method.

The timber under the tray which is shaped to the chassis looks to be original it is still varnished and I can’t see any damage so far, the actual sides and tray are still sound just going to wash and then re- varnish, we plan to keep it as original as we can. We brought it home and gave it a pressure wash and are very happy with what it looks like, it is a 4 cylinder petrol I am not sure of the year as yet the Serial number is 27804751G and body number 1J925617. It has had some parts removed being the brake drums, shoes and master cylinders for both the clutch and brakes. Also removed were the seat swabs and indicator stalk but the rest is in tact so not a lot of stuff to buy/ find we have a Series 3 troopy with a rusted chassis and firewall we can use for some bits and purchase the rest.
Thanks for the replies, does anyone know from the chassis number the year of build, I also have a Series 3 1973 Ute with wooden tray that looks similar to this one they are both local vehicles so maybe the trays were manufactured in the region.

You may need to check that moisture trapped between the timber & top of chassis has not caused rust. Apart from that very nice example .

Thanks for the information regarding the build of the Ute, yes it now has a petrol engine I don’t know number yet I will hopefully get underneath it on the weekend and try to find all relevant numbers. As you can see from the writing on the door it was used for carting firewood prior to being stored in the shed some 20 plus years ago ( could be more judging by the mobile number)hence the lack of corrosion on the chassis and running gear.
