Interesting you said you have new uni joints......has the noise started since you installed the new joints?

Does the whine happen all the time or under load or coast in 4th.

I did wonder about the synchro on 4th, but think it’s more likely to be a bearing, especially if it’s continuous.
Hi Cadas, definitely intermittent, just at those speeds when under load - i.e. as well as being able to “accelerate through it”, if I back off it goes away straight away as well. Hope to check out some of the ideas presented here tomorrow afternoon...

Hi ramblingboy, unfortunately the vehicle was not operational with the old UJs, so I couldn’t say. I replaced them with new Toyo ones as part of the rebuild.

Looking back at the gearbox sections, if it’s only happening in 4th then that is when the gearbox operates differently to 1/2/3.

Couple of things it could be, it could be the lay shaft Is not disengaging and what you hear is the layshaft gears spinning or catching or one of the intermediate gears on the bronze bush is sticking maybe.

Check the oil for sparkles or gold colour.

But another possibility is incorrect preload on the output bearings - ensure the nut on the output flange is tight.

However, it appearing at specific speeds is almost certainly something is resonant at those speeds. one of the likely suspects is the red knob lever having lost its anti-rattle spring on the ball, or the gearlever due to wear on the ball or a loose support. But it could also be a loose body part that is resonant.

    Hope this helps.
It looks as though JD gets the prize on this one. It seems that the anti rattle spring is MIA. But I shifted the transfer lever into low range then back into high, did a quick 20 km round trip to Williamtown RAAF base and the whine has all but disappeared (you can see how often it gets shifted into low range). There is still a soft whine at those speeds (over and above the normal gearbox whine) but maybe a new anti rattle spring will help alleviate that.

Hopefully that has solved (time will tell). Thanks a lot to everyone who responded, I’m astonished at both the exceptional level of expertise in AULRO and its members willingness to pass this on to complete strangers. Hopefully I can pay it forward in the future.

    Cheers,

    Matt
