    1963 Series 2a (CKD) grille?

    Hi,

I've got a 1963 Series 2a 88 from South Australia. It's a knock-down built by Pressed Metal Corp out of Sydney.

It is very original but missing the front badge & grille.

The current grille is a metal wire type from a series 3 that's been chopped to fit the head-lights.

I've heard that it might have had a unique 'Australian' grille and have seen a few 1963s (both long & short) with a more fancy wire grille online (most were in South Australia) than the standard Series 2a criss-cross checker type.

Any advice on the correct grille type? Also searching for the from badge (Rover Australia pressed metal) one too.

    Cheers,
    Dan

Grille shown here I believe is 'Australian'.

Often fitted to 6-cylinder Land Rovers, not sure if it was only 6-cylinders though.

I am certain (but possibly wrong) that the standard (or a locally made close copy) grille was fitted in 1963. A few years later an Australian special grille with horizontal bars only and chromed instead of galvanised was fitted. I associate th1s with the sixes, from 1967, but they may have been fitted to fours as well. And the two may well have been fitted at the same time as supplies varied - Rover did that sort of thing!

    Hello from Brisbane.

The "Australian" grille came in about 1967 - my 1968 88" 4 cylinder had it fitted as did our later 1972 109" with the headlights in the guards, although the grille on the later truck was wider.

The first one is in the truck museum in Winton. The second one is our old 109" languishing in a neighbours paddock.

A locally assembled 1963 model would have had the same/similar grille as the UK trucks of that vintage.

Just to confuse matters, my 1970 ex-army has the original style, as I believe did all army Series 2/2a, with the more rectangular version for the ones with the headlights in the mudguards.

To be honest I don't recall ever seeing a military Series 2A of any age with the newer grille.
