    Bonnet catch Series 2A

    Hi All,
    I’m trying to get my bonnet to to close and latch properly and realised it never has since I’ve had the 2A. It holds on the safety collar and obviously rattles up and down. I’m not sure if the bonnet striker pin is worn out or put together right. Can anyone send me some pictures of the striker pin as fitted please. It seems to be worn or incorrectly fitted by PO. It’s a 1964 88”.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi, thanks for your reply. It’s different to the Defender one it has a nut that is fitted to a threaded section down to the ‘nose’ which has a fixed hex portion too. It does not have a washer at the top to contain the spring. I’ll take a picture tomorrow morning as I’m in the UK and it’s dark now. Cheers

    The adjustment is critical , only have to be 1/4 turn out & they won't catch

    Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated.

    I have tried to get it to close fully again today but no joy. It seems like the pin is at 90 degrees when it enters the catch, but the catch is on a slight ramp which is part of the radiator panel so the two are at slightly different angles when they engage. When it closes it only seem to catch on the ‘first’ stage the large cupped washer under the spring. The pin doesn’t want to go down anymore for some reason. I have tried the pin off the bonnet and it does sometimes go all the way in but as soon as I bolt it back onto the bonnet no joy.
    Here’s a few pics of my pin;

    I’m thinking of fitting the military bonnet hooks for a future arrangement if I can’t solve this.

    Thanks again for the replies.

    Cheers

    The pin screws into a nut welded to the bracket on the bonnet, and how for it protrudes depends on how far it is screwed in and secured by a locknut (needs thin Whitworth spanner to tighten this through the spring). It should be adjusted so it goes in far enough latch, the latch being triggered by the curved washer.

    I suggest removing both the lock and the pin and confirming that they work together - there may be a broken spring in the latch or other breakages (or just wear) or it may just need cleaning up and oiling. The pin and the latch need to be correctly aligned - the latch can be moved around with the attachment bolts loose.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks for the reply John.

    I’ll have a good look at the alignment, there’s definitely something not right here I think. I have managed to get another bonnet catch and plate which I’ll try too.

    Cheers
