    Yesterday’s progress

Finally made some progress installing the engine to the chassis, I am refurbishing a Series 2A 109” Ute it is not a total rebuild just doing the running gear and motor. To date I have rebuilt the gearbox, front differential, swivels and brakes. Next is the rear differential and brakes. I am just going to clean up the body, tray and use it for a daily.

    Some things I found

During the refurbishment of the engine I found some very badly damaged components necessitating the change of the original block. And yesterday I dismantled the rear differential only to find more damage luckily I have a spare to replace the differential. This leads me to a question that I hope someone can answer, are non military Land Rover Series differentials the same ratio as Military ones.
I have searched the manual and the only difference I can find is for 1 ton and off course Salisbury units I am referring to the standard Rover differential in front and rear of the earlier models.

Rover diffs fitted to Series Landrovers are all the same ratio (4.7) except for Series 3 Stage 1 (3.54) and some very early 80" that were different ratios. And a few specials.

However, you need to be aware that these Rover diffs are interchangeable with the ones used in a number of Rover cars over the years and with Rangerover Classic and Discovery 1. These are almost invariably higher geared (usually 3.54), and have not infrequently been fitted to Series Landrovers with non-original engines or even occasionally to ones with original engines. Since a change may have been made decades ago, the only safe way is to count teeth both on your diffs and the one you are thinking of getting!

Hi John, off hand do you know how many teeth on the crown wheel of a Rover 4.7 and a Rover 3.54? I am working on diffs as well and this reminded me I shouldn’t assume the diffs in my amassed collection are the same ratio. Cheers, Matt

Not off hand without finding one and counting them. To get the ratio just divide the number of teeth on the crown wheel by the number on the pinion.
