I don't really have any idea, but assuming the length and splines are correct, I suspect that they are simply from different production runs, possibly in different countries. After all if you include S3 swb, interchangeable axles were used from 1958 to around 1980, with production in several countries, even without considering third party replacements.

Since these axles almost invariably fail at or adjacent to the splines, the strength is almost entirely dependent on the metallurgy (composition and heat treatment) and finish of the machining, and any increased diameter irrelevant.

Agreed. I did have some Series axles made by DUFOR (Duly and Hansford) in Australia. Dunno what I did with them.

(I still have some DUFOR spanners.)

I vaguely remember that this was the case - but you would not be able to see the difference, as it was in the metallurgy.

And I am not sure whether it was ever actually confirmed, or just anecdotal, but axle breakages seemed much more common in the 1970s than earlier, allegedly due to poor heat treatment in manufacture or poor quality control of the steel used. This sort of product would be very sensitive to the inclusion, for example, of slag, in the steel used for forging the axle, with the inclusion acting as a stress localiser. Same way that Series 3 steel body and chassis parts rusted worse than earlier models, allegedly due to the use of cheap steel. The plus 33 may have been simply bringing them back to what they were earlier, or may in fact have been a real increase in strength. But as I said - unless labelled, you would not be able to tell by looking at the axle.

Original S1 fully floating half shafts are thicker than the S2As. The star flange suggests that the shaft was used on a S1 or early S2. What's the exact length of the shafts, without the hub caps ?

    Axles what are these

The thicker two axles measure the same length exactly as the thinner ones, the long ones are 88.5 centimetres and the short ones 66 centimetres. The thicker ones were from an early Series 2 and the thinner ones from a Series 2A.

Almost all S1s have a semifloating axle with a circular hub as part of them, and they are thicker because the axle holds the wheel upright as well as driving it. A few very late S1 have a fully floating axle identical to the S2/2a/3 except for the length - a couple of centimetres shorter.

I don't recognise the one with the triangle flange on it as having anything to do with a Landrover!

(Just for completeness, lwb S3 and a few very late S2a have a Salisbury rear axle. Half shafts for these have a 24 spline and are much heavier, and in late S3 production, swb changed the spline on the outer ends for commonality with lwb. Some Series Landrovers such as the One Ton and armoured vehicles, as well as Series 2b FC used completely different axles.)

The 3 top ones are S1, 1-1/4" dia. The 3 bottom ones are later ones, 1-1/16" dia.
