You may have a blocked muffler causing too much back pressure,
I've a Series 2 with 2.25lt engine. Under load the engine bogs down and slows, to the point where i need first gear and even then there is a fair bit of tappet noise.
So far i've:
- Emptied and replaced the fuel (a bit of dirty in the tank, but nothing too much)
- Checked the sediment bowl (clean)
- Replaced the inline filter
- Check fuel pressure (sitting at 2 PSI - heavy revs this drops to 1.5 PSI, but it was hard to see if this happen when driving but i think under load it also dropped to 1.5 PSI
- Individually pulled spark plug and engine ran rougher with each plug
I'm getting what i think is exhaust gases out of the oil breather - Gases out of the oil breather - YouTube
I'm not sure if this is related?
I'm not sure what to look at next, but i was thinking the timing?
I'd love some help
Cheers

That muffler and tailpipe is fairly new, but there is a repair on the old pipe near the muffler. What's the easiest way to test this?

I
If you can disconnect the muffler from the front pipe & take for a drive (be a bit noisy) also you can try with muffler in place seeing how much pressure is coming out the tailpipe with your hand just rev it stationary. usually when going up hill it will make a shushing noise out the exhaust if the muffler is blocked.
the other thing are any of the brakes binding including the hand brake. There are a few things on the internet on checking a blocked muffler .
Is the tappet noise perhaps pinking from timing too far advanced, do you have a lot of black smoke as in overfueling i am having similar problems and in my case it’s low power on hills and black smoke if I back off on throttle it clears and starts to go. I have Stromberg carburettor 1 3/8 installed I believe the main jet may have been altered I am waiting on delivery of adjustable one to see if I can fix it.
I would check timing first, does it tend to run on after shutting down ( carbon build up in head) or any other symptoms.
Just looked at video what you see is normal from a motor without PCV piping all old cars did it most had a pipe down the side of the motor and the fumes would come out there. It just normal breathing.

have you checked the points and timing?
Yeah another vote for checking points and timing.
Symptoms sound similar to what happened to mine, power loss and pinking noise (plus an overheating coil).
Turned out to be duff points and a loose dizzy.

We thank you all for your help.
So tonight I started with the distributor points, umm before I adjusted it the 0.8mm feeler gauge was sliding through! So that's now adjusted.
I then moved onto the timing, connected the timing strobe up to Spark 1 lead and the light was blinking and intermittent. Sprark 2 lead the same, Spark 3 and 4 lead the light was perfect!!
- Tried changing the leads...no change
- Swapped Spark 4 and Spark 1...success the failure followed the spark plug.
So tomorrow I'm off to grab some new plugs!! Hopefully that will be the end!
Just in time to as Friday the rover is off for a pre-roadie. If the plugs don't solve the issue then it will need to be trailered to the mechanic!
Thanks again for the replies. I'll up date you soon!
