I have been having issues with the engine running rough and very rich, I pulled the carby apart several times and even changed the main jet for an adjustable one. I believe the issue is in the power valve system and couldn’t seem to sort it. The carburettor (Stromberg) was installed on the engine when I got the car, so I believed it had been operational before it was parked up.
From what I have read and discussed with people the carburettor may be for a Red motor Holden possibly from a 186 and is possibly too large.
With that in mind I was able to procure a Stromberg carburettor from a Grey motor Holden which were 139 cubic inch capacity which is close to the 2 1/4 Land Rover motor. So yesterday I swapped the top half off the Grey motor carburettor onto the bottom of the Red carburettor as the stud pattern is smaller on the early model and wouldn’t fit the manifold.
I had stripped and cleaned the early carby so after installing it I took it for a test drive and it ran like a dream without changing any internal components. It pulled away smoothly and when I headed up a hill pulled well without black smoke and misfiring.
Very happy with the results I now only have a few jobs to finish and I will get it registered, my main job is repairing door tops I know I can buy some but I have chosen to try to repair them. I managed to cut the rusted pieces off from the top sections. I have had the rusted pieces copied by a local metal fabrication firm and now I just have to drill the bolt holes and weld the pieces together and hopefully have new tops. Cost me fifty bucks for both doors so if it works I’m ahead. Pictures to follow.
