Need some advice!

A holden motor in a series landrover does not really provide much more ooomph than a 2.25 in good nick and in fact does have a few disadvantages like wrong revs for the gearing.

Most people compare their knackered 2.25 with a new fresh holden engine and think wow. In my series 1, I put in a holden engine and it went fine and considered the same when I seized my series 111 2.25, but I rebuilt the landie engine, shaved the head a little to get rid of a warp, fully reconditioned the dissy and carby and put extractors on - wow. The series 111 with the original recon engine went better than my series 1 with the holden engine.

So think seriously about not using a holden engine but if you do, take into account some sort of 5 speed gearbox or an overdrive will be needed to match the holden rev characteristics with landie gearing.

A friend of mine got a new head from Turner Engineering in England. His vehicle now rockets along, but still has plenty of low down torque. Much better than any Holden conversion. Holden engines are useless for low down torque, and don't rev as high. So if it has less torque down low, and does not go as fast, why would you want it?

In circa 1982 - fresh from driving S2's in the Army - I ventured on to a beach in a civilian Holden-powered S2. How I ever got the machine off that beach is a mystery to me, but one I am grateful for. Compared to the Rover engine they are absolute crap and turn a superb off-roader into a liability :(

Olmate has had its Landy motor rebuilt a couple of years ago and I had the head done up so I can run unleaded thru her. Elect dizzy and some minor upgrades - she is beaut. Pulls well (carry's a bit of gear all of the time), runs efficiently and has the right gearing for the box. I have a rebuilt series 3 box with overdrive and I wouldn't change her now. Very happy. ;)
