Well I finally got some time to pull the floor out again and fix the vibration on the high-low stick, Put it all back together and parked it up for a week or so. SWMBO and I got a chance last Saturday to take Ralph for a blat, even MOTWAF commented on how good he was running and the dogs loved it too. On the way home I felt like he had reduced power, anyway I stopped off at the bottle shop for a thirst quenching beverage or two and when I swung into the parking spot, he almost stopped without me applying much pedal at all. Got out and noticed the brake lights were still on (engine was still running). Felt the wheel hubs and, Yep! hot enough to melt the gonads off a brass monkey. Bought the aforementioned beverages and went straight home. He obviously has pressure at the brake switch if the lights are on, so I think it may be a free play issue on the brake pedal. I have to refit the front drive shaft next weekend if I get time, so it'll be something else to look at. Any other idea's if it's not free travel in the pedal?
    TIA Ian

If it is all the brakes, just about has to be the master cylinder, either adjustment or cylinder is failing.

Thanks John, The drivers side hubs were a bit hotter than the passenger side. but it looks like they are all stuck on slightly. Something to do this weekend if I get the chance.

    Thanks Ian,

    A great read.

I"ve been looking at a resto project on a Series II I've got my eye on myself (see New Member Intro thread); after going through this thread I'm wondering if it's a bit more that my skill set would allow...

BTW, we've met before via a certain Strom forum.

    Pete.

    Pete,

If you can read Ikea instructions you can take on a Series restoration.

Buy the correct workshop manual and part catalogue and you're on your way. There is so much experience and combined knowledge on this forum that you'll pretty much find any answer you're after.

That said, there is also enough contacts and vendors to assist with those really daunting tasks (like adjusting the settings and clearances on a 2.0 liter side valve engine! )

    Cheers,

    Lou

    Hey Pete

Didn't realise that you have caught the bug . Have a go and do one, Iv'e done a series 2a (Ralph) and a series 3 (Smeg) and a Rangie , they are a lot of fun. Just do what I did, if it starts to get to you, jump on the Strom and go for a ride. If you do have a go, let me know if you need a hand, PM me. I would love to help. SWMBO wont let me do another one till I get rid of a toy or two you know RonB is on here too don't you? you cant get away from him!.

    Cheers Ian

Got a chance to play with Ralph on the weekend, sick of sitting around watching the idiot box with this bloody flu, so I played around a bit. Managed to fit the mudflaps.

The I replaced the starter motor that only seems to charge when it feels like it.
Then gave him a clean, adjusted the freeplay on the brake pedal and took him for a good 45 min run. All seems ok now. Just have to find the diesel drip on the injector pump and refit the front drive shaft next weekend
