I think the double set of lights is great, and I'd definitely consider that option if I had a Series.
Just think, no branches or rubbish can knock the extra lights out of alignment like it happens with spot-lights, where you often end up on a trip with one light in the clouds and the other shining 2 inches in front of the radiator....
Run relays and a decent alternator and battery, and you could have H4 rated to 100W on each bright beam: 400W will really make these wallies with their BMWs and their blue tinted lights sit up and take notice.
I think he has a matching 88" too.
The Merc engine that he has used, can you get that in Aus ?
Yeah mate, if you're after one keep a look out for the Mercedes 300D as they use the OM617. Fairly common car and they do come up for sale or wrecking fairly often.
Heck, there was one around the corner from me with a newly rebuilt motor for $1000. Was extremely tempted.
Oh and yeah, the guy did have a matching 88". It had the OM616 in it (4 cyl). He built the LWB one because on extended trips he found he just didn't have the space.
