Stub axle seal sleeve

Thanks for the info, im still unsure of how to proceed though.

I know its been said that "up to 1980 or so" have replaceable sleeves but how do I actually tell if mine IS replaceable?
My car is '81.
If you look at the picture I posted in the first message it certainly LOOKS replaceable, as far as the stub and sleeve appear to be separate pieces.

Are they distinguished by the non-replaceable ones being a one piece, machined stub/sleeve?

I dont want to drill and cold chisel it unless im positive it CAN be replaced!

Basically my car (daily drive) is off the road until I fix it so I need to know if I buy a replacement stub axle, replacement sleeve or do I try to get it "speedi-sleeved" by local mechanics who probably will have no idea what im talking about... :(

G'day All, having just done this exercise on my S2A with NOS parts, I just had a look at the WKSP manual for the Series 3, and it clearly shows the 'distance piece' and how to remove it by cutting through the distance piece with a cold chisel.
My personal preference is to do it in my lathe (but not everyone has a lathe!), turn it down to approx 10 thou then cut it whilst still in the lathe with a very sharp small cold chisel, check for any burrs etc, remove from lathe, lightly oil the new distance piece (where it's going to slide onto the stub axle), place in press, using a suitable lenght of pipe (O/D of 60mm) set the distance peice square to the stub, then slowly apply pressure with the press and it will seat, job done, approx 20 minutes hope thats of some help, cheers Dennis

Ive read the same Dennis and really am hoping I can do the same with mine. (albeit without the lathe!)

Which service manual are you using?
I have two different ones and neither of them mention anything about it!
(for ANY year model)

I think, but am not absolutely certain, that the ones with replaceable sleeves are the earlier ones with different size inner and outer bearings. Yours should have the later ones with same size bearings and non-replaceable sleeve, but since axle assemblies and sub-assemblies are interchangeable from Series 2 up to the end of Series 3 production, this is no guarantee that it is what you have!

My hub has different inner and outer bearings AND....I just got the sleeve off. :cool:

I thought id take a punt and drill/chisel it - sure enough it fell straight off. :D

Ill get the new one sent out tomorrow, should be back on the road before Wednesday I hope.

No unfortunately.
Either some fitted older gear retrospectively or there is some mix and match happening from the factory?
