After encountering a few issues recently following a pretty full-on day off road, I've had the car at the mechanic's for a couple of weeks waiting on a verdict.
They've finally come back with the suggestion that the carby needs an overhaul. It's a Zenith that I bought new about three years ago for about $200 if I recall correctly. The quote for a full refurb is about $550!
Am I going mad?
What do you guys recommend? Should I replace it again or should I upgrade to give the engine a bit more oomph?

Buy the kit and do it yourself part of the fun of owning a series3 or buy the kit and pay yourself $200 and save the rest
PS. and look for a cheaper workshop

I was dumbfounded when the quote came through. I'd rather push the thing all the way home than pay that.
So, any merit to other carbies such as Weber or Stromberg, or are they just not suited to this engine?

Haven't driven it much yet due to axle seal failure but already idle and throttle response is heaps better.
The major problem with Zenith carburetters is warping of the top cover. This allows the various passages that go from one part to the other to leak at the gasket, with unpredictable results, and also allow the O-ring seal to leak, usually giving an excessively rich mixture.
The solution is to remove the top cover, remove all the bits attached to it, and check the mating surface for flatness (one way of doing this is to wet the surface and hold it against a plate glass window (such as your door top or windscreen) and observe whether the whole surface is touching. If it is not flat, lay a new sheet of 600grit wet and dry face up on a sheet of plate glass and lap the top section mating surface flat, removing a minimum of metal. While you are at it, probably a good idea to check the main body as well.
When reassembling, make sure the heads of the screws holding the emulsion block do not touch the body casting (there is not much clearance, and burs or wrong lockwashers or screws can give problems).
Cost of this will be a carburetter kit plus a sheet of wet and dry and a couple of hours.

After a fair bit of chasing I've had some feedback:
The mechanic reckons that the carby specialist has told him he wants to pull off the carby and overhaul it completely and to replace the inlet manifold for one that breathes better. That is apparently what the $500 or so was to cover.
I've never heard of any of this being done before. Is this a common job? I don't know any specific details yet as gleaning info from anyone at this place is like getting blood from a stone.

I recently had a Zenith 36IV carbie completely refurbished (reconditioned too) by Dual Fuel here in sunny Caboolture, (he supplied everything) cost $200.00......I handed him a clapped out wreck and he handed me back a virtually brand new carby. New everything.
Get the kit and another for spare.

Caboolture eh? I grew up there. In fact I still visit from time to time as my Dad is a fixture in town. I wish I had as decent a mechanic on this side of the country. I'd have thought that LR help would be everywhere here given the number of poms in Perth. Oh well...
