chilly - ran out of fuel the other day. well almost. very low on fuel and was going down hill and it started spluttering. started going uphill and it would get enough fuel and run normal. my house site and street are definitely not flat and it did this a few times whilst i was moving my car around. so i figured the pick up in the tank is in a position where if going uphill it will be able to access the last of the fuel while if going downhill it can't. makes sense - gives you the best chance to get up and over an incline/hill if running low on fuel.
worth keeping in mind if you stray too far from the original tank design.
LVS at silverdale sell those ally tanks they have them made up locally seen a pair there for s3 i think about $165 ea might work out easier than doing it yourself:)
Plan to cut the steel, bend and weld at work. So not a problem making. Plus it will be FREEEE!!!
Go idea to allow for pick up...seem to remember tanks having a 'pool' were the pick up pipe is.
