... well you'll be picking a hard one to start with, the gearbox & TC are a very heavy unit, not at all like an older manual ford or holden gb

if you're working from above you'll have to remove parts of the floor & tunnel, however if it is the 109" in the pic next to your name, it should have a removeable crossmember which will enable lowering it to the floor (via a chainblock on a beam through the side doors supported on 44gal drums or similar either side)

if the vehicle is raised on stands and you have a transmission adapter for a floor jack all the better (you won't need the chainblock) - let's know how you go :)

Oh boy it will be 1 big learning curve.;)

I find in Perth its pretty hard to find a mechanic that will charge only $80hr most are about $100hr.
Dealers are in a class of their own ! in a bad way.

If the labour charge is more that say $110hr I just wouldnt pay it.
I have in the past and have found that unfortunatly the more money you pay doesn't equate to a better job.
So in answer to your question would the labour have taken 13hrs, if not go elsewhere IMO

Well, a S3 is a really absurdly simple machine to work on and fixing the seals on the box is not only easy but cheap as well, if you shop around for parts. I doubt that grease will lubricate the box well enough, unless he used semi-fluid grease.

Good idea to try doing things yourself, I bet you get as much enjoyment out of it as I do, especially when you calculate the labour cost saved :D

A mechanic in Sydney will cost you anywhere from $80 - $120 per hour for labour depending on if the work is being done by an every day mechanic or a dealer/ land rover specialist. You can save a bit of money by sourcing parts yourself.

Hi mate I'm in Kingsgrove, Thanks for the offer Unfortunately my friends in past who have worked on cars now are just caught up with their own own day to day life and cant always be there but point taken I should not be to worried to try it myself hell I use to do more in the past on my old Holden's and Ford's. :(

An intereting note: in my mechanic days I could not help but to notice the rise in cost of labour in brisbane from the outskirts round redbank etc at $55 closer to the city at $75, and the city being round $95 quite ridiculous that depending on geographical placement provides a reason to be anal raped by labour costs.
