    Series III wheel bearings

Does anyone know of a supplier of 'quality' wheel bearings for the Series III at a reasonable price.
I asked one of my customers who buys a lot of bearings and also a bearing company we deal with and I was a little surprised at the prices quoted ....

Not sure if the bearings are different for the hubs on a Salisbury axle but the numbers are as follows :-
    Smaller Bearing Inner 11162 $64.95 outer 11300 $ 60.10
    Larger Bearing Inner 359S $ 47.15 outer $ 142.80 !!!

So Timken bearings for one hub are $ 315.

At those prices I may have to use some Indian bearings from 4 Wheel Drives. My FFR will only be used for light-duty once it's back on the road and it is a considerably cheaper option.
I fitted the Indian (no-name) bearings on the front of my Series 1 and it got me to Cooma & back but I bet the original Skefco bearings on the other side outlast the Indian ones.
I'll also have to check UK prices, maybe it would be worthwhile shipping in a batch of them ?

Can you imagine in years-to-come ....parting out a Land Rover to hopefully get a set of good wheel bearings.

Unfortunately Timken bearings for Land Rovers are now made in India.

I got Timken (as above) from Brian Danielson at Land Vehicle Spares and also from Gary Gjerdy from CLR. They were significantly cheaper than the price I was quoted by SKF Bearing Service.

Make sure which model SIII - after 1980 all bearings went to the Range Rover/Defender size, even on the non-Stage 1 models.

BTW: The kits from Kotara, have un-branded bearings so likely to be the same as the ones from Blackburn South.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Even the Britpart Bearings that come in little Britpart boxes are unbranded to country or manufacturer - just a bearing number. The ones in the kits often come in plastic bags with the same lack of manufacturer and country of origin.

The Timken still come in black and orange boxes, but instead of being USA, England or Australia they are India. One can only hope that Timken is doing the quality control and so the bearings are still worthy of the Timken name!

    Thanks to everyone that replied.
The 4 Wheel Drives bearings are unbranded and just have a part number etched on the inner & outer race. They used to supply MNR bearings which are Indian made.
A while ago I decided to replace the MNR bearings on my Defender with Timken. The Timken bearings were about $25 each and the MNR bearings had some strange marks on the bearing surface despite having only covered approximately 10,000Klms. When they were drifted out (using a large pin-punch) the outer race was damaged by the punch ! I have never seen this with any 'big-brand' bearing, hence my concern at using no-name bearings.

Looks like I am stuck with the no-name bearings in the short term at least.

    Thanks, Colin

Just collected the bearings from 4 Wheel Drives, now in proper packaging (not supplied loose like the last time I purchased them !). Branded Karsons....
Karsons (India) - Nuts, Bolts & Screws, Automobile Accessories and Automobile Parts & Components manufacturers and suppliers.

Engine mounts, swivel hub seals, bump stops and other rubber products I've purchased from them have also been branded Karsons.
