    spigot bush SIII

Did the series III , 2.25L petrol, flywheel spigot bush come in 2 sizes? Was the 6cyl and 4cyl versions of the flywheel the same apart from the bush?

Reason i ask is i aquired a new flywheel which appears identical but the spigot bush is larger than the original. W

    hole lot of difference

    Hi Wallydog

Not sure about this and I haven't a series 3 parts manual ( yet ) to check the difference.

I far as I know the flywheels are not interchangable between the series one 2 litre, 2.6 and the 2.25 motors, as they all had different part no's.
The bushes for primary pinion do have however the same part number for all the motors up to the end of the series 2A's

2.0 litre, 4 cylinder motor, bush for primary pinion part number 08566
2.25 litre, 4 cylinder motor, bush for primary pinion part number 08566
2.6 litre, 6 cylinder motor, bush for primary pinion part number 08566

So IMHO, the larger flywheel spigot bush, most likely went to the smaller size, between the gearboxes changes from the 2A to the S3.

    Cheers Arthur

My S3 parts book says 8566L for all three engines but it doesn't say what the "L" stands for,

Id say your on something there. I was loaned another input shaft that was the fatter spigot type as a clutch alignment tool, and i discovered it has a thread where the bearing sits, which the manual says is the earlier type.

It must be a 2A flywheel. I better count the ring gear teeth to make sure that part is the same? otherwise the bolt holes line up and visual looks the same. thanks Arthur

    Hi Wallydog

I used to count the teeth of the ewe's to find out their age.
I dont think that idea works real well for Land rover's.

Have a look around the flywheel as there should be a etching of it's part number on the outside edge.

    Hi Charlie and Wallydog

My S3 parts manual is even more vague, all the pinion bushes have the number 8566, without the "0" in front of the number and do not have the 'L' either.

The Defender parts manual does show the number for the pinion bush as being 8566L, for all the motors, 2.25 through to the TD5, as fitted into manual gearbox models, except the V8 engines.

The inside of these later bushes are smaller, I had the misfortune to receive the wrong bush in a heavy duty clutch 300 TDi kit, so I reused my original bush.

It now looks like the outside measurement is the same from S1 to the TD5 and from S3 onwards then has the smaller internal measurement.

    Therefore, L = little hole

8566L thanks a million Arthur. The internal diameter on the small one is 19mm and the larger one is 23mm. I need the small one.

Charlie and Arthur, whats the best workshop practice in removing and fitting a new bush? Do i need to heat around the old bush first or do i just drive it out with a socket?

Do i oven warm the flywheel before fitting the new bush? W

I have a series 3 and a 2A pulled apart at the moment, so if you need any measurements/dimensions just give me a hoy.

    Cheers, Mick
