    Unhappy 2 series 3 PROBLEMS

OK i need to know about the izuzu diesels in landys . There usualy the 3.9 ..
Well i have a chance to buy a holden rodeo with an izuzu in it, Its about a very late 90s to early 2000 model. It has about 200k on the clock.
It was my stepfathers & he sold it to a nearby farm owner , Well it got rolled so the bloke sold the tilt tray off the back but the rest is just sitting there..
Does anyone know what size they are .I have Harry i was thinking it could be fitted to but he was origanaly a landrover 6 but now has the holden 6 in it..
With the landys fitted with the 3.9 izuzu motor are they fitted to the 4 cyl gearbox as mine is the 6..Would it be able to fit using izuzu landy bits is what i realy need to know .. I dont know much about the izuzu motors except that they are a good engine & i have only delt with the 2 1/4 diesel landy engine..
Is this engine worth me buying or should i just stick with whats in it now is there much work involved in fitting it ????
If i do get it i will be buying whats left of the car so i'll have all the accesseries for the engine..

Allso my last landy the yellow series 2a we had used to go good in the bush but if you drove it onroad in 4X4 it used to jump & fart all over the road & kick threw the steering wheel. I thought hello someone has changed the ratio in one of the diffs but was told na thats just how they are in 4X4 on bituman..
Well awhile ago i put the green one in 4X4 on the road & nothing happend just drove like normal albeit slower as i put it in low..
Whats the best way to test if its in 4X4 & that the front diff is working. & if it not what could it be ? the diff or the box ?..
Its great in 2 wheel drive on the road & havent had this one up the bush at all..
Just worried theres something wrong with the front end thats all as there was no change in driving when in 4X4 ecept it was slower being in low range..??????
Any help would be great thanks...

The Isuzu/Landies were the Stage 1 or coil sprung models. The engine is a 3.9litre 4BD1 and will be bigger than the Isuzu in the Rodeo. They were originally fitted to the Range Rover 4 speed box (very strong) but are much longer than the SIII box.

The SIII box will not stand up to the 4BD1 and will have trouble on the smaller Rodeo engine as well. No doubt you could do it.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

I have a couple of times seen Series Landrovers for sale on evilbay that have a 2.8l Isuzu turbo diesel. So it must be possible but I have no idea what is involved or even what gearbox they used etc.

With the green one - does it have freewheeling hubs? If it does and they are disengaged then it will not exhibit the windup problems on road. Easiest way to check is probably to jack just the front off the ground, engage 4wd and see if you can turn the front wheels. If it is 4wd then you won't be able to turn them, in 2wd you will.

I am pretty sure the Isuzu diesels in early Jackaroo's are 4JB1 or something along those lines, and later ones had a 3 or 3.1 litre TD with a different name. the Isuzu diesels in the series 3 stage 1's are a 3.9 litre 4BD1. I am fairly sure that they all come either turbo'ed or NA.

I am assuming you would need some kind of adaptor plate made up for any of the isuzu motors to mate to a series gbox as a minimum. I am pretty sure Isuzurover on here has investigated putting a smaller isuzu diesel into his 2a LWB.

The 2.8L is a 4JB1T - great little engine, direct inection and timing gears in Jackodeo spec. IMHO a much, much better option than a 300Tdi.

Then came the 4JG1T - 3.1L but indirect injection, so less efficient.

If it is newer than that then it will be a 3.0L 4J(J1T?) and you will have some electrics to worry about.

Adaptor kits for the first 2 are available ex-UK.

Any isusu diesel 2.5L or bigger will eat a series 4-speed for breakfast and spit out a pile of metallic gravel.

By all means buy it and fit it if cheap, but I would use the rodeo gearbox, and maybe divorced LT230 t-case (or the rodeo t-case). That will save you the cost of an adaptor from the UK.

I've recently stumbled across two Series 3 landrovers for sale, both of which have the Isuzu 4BD1 motor fitted to the series gearbox
Both vehicles also kept the original look at the front, ie the grille/radiator panel hadn't been moved.

I'd certainly be interested to know how they were done, were they one offs or was an adaptor kit available ??

My Dormobile needs a diesel ..........

I have seen a 4BC1 (3.3L) bolted to a series 3 box for sale. There must have been an adaptor for sale, however that doesn't mean it was ever a sensible conversion...
