I'll miss being able to put tools ect. on the back while working on cars though.
That and the bumper was good for coffee cups and biskets while working on Mick's toy(1964 Gav.).
Might have to get somthing else to fill the void, just don't tell SHMBO

    Does this mount look right?
It's angle and flat wielded to fitt, looks like a good job though.

That mount looks a lot like the one I have on my 186. And apparently it has been registered in QLD.

I'd love to rip it out and stick in a 300tdi....

    She's a runner!

So, I took a battery and dizzy lead over to my mates workshop to see if I could get it to start. Pulled the plugs, checked the oil (I will replace this later, but it doesn't appear to have any nastys in it. Put in the battery and cranked the engine - the oil pressure light went out pretty quick. Checked for spark - nice thick blue spark, stuffed the plugs back in, and ran a fuel line to a drum of clean fuel, tipped a bit of said fuel down the carby, and cranked it. It started pretty much straight away! It stalled a couple of times until the clean fuel got into the carby, then sat there ticking away nicely. Took a bit to get some oil to the rockers, - I have had this happen before, and the oil pump was a bit stuffed, so I'll grab a new one for it at some stage, but everything works. No coolant leaks, alternator charges the battery, all the lights, indicators, wipers work. Only the heater fan doesn't, as it's been disconnected, but pretty happy all in all.

I didn't get any further, the clutch and brakes don't work, so I don't know if the gearbox or anything else is ok yet. Pulled the clutch master out, as it is stuck - got it filled with CRC at the moment, trying to see if I can get the piston out - I managed to tap it in a bit further, but it is resisting me getting the thing out...

Anyway, just thought I'd post this, as it is a good start.

    Cheers - Gav

    Moving under its own steam.

So, managed to get the piston out of the clutch master after soaking it for a couple of days. All good inside apart from all the gunk. Cleaned it all out, then honed the cylinder with a bit of wet and dry, and put it all back together. Pulled the slave cylinder off, and it was in the same condition, but the piston yielded easily and the same treatment was given to it.

Put everything back together, and bled the clutch. Clutch petal felt good. Started it, pushed the clutch in - selected 1st ..... and...... away I went!

Tried reverse - all good, but there is something in the driveline that didn't sound right - a clunking from up the front only when going backwards - not sure what that is yet, but I'll get to that at some point.

Drove it out of my mates workshop and towards the street - now in second and rolling along nicely - when I realalised I had forgotton that the brakes don't work yet...

Oops - on with the handbrake - good job that works well

So, a bit more carefully now took it for a drive up the street - it is a dead end in that part of the industrial estate, so all safe to do so, and no one else around there on a Saturday arvo.

All the gears work well, but the box was making a bit of a whining sound - probably taking a bit to get the oil flowing again - if there is any in there - I didn't check...

Only a short trip, but it goes well, steers ok, and everything seems to work as it should.

So, onto the brakes next to see if I can get it to stop.

Oh - by the way - don't mention any of this to SWMBO - I'm not supposed to be working on it yet, but I can't help myself...

At least it can be moved easily around the workshop now so it won't be in my mates way.

    Cheers - Gav

Good to hear you got it going.
I've got one or three projects here you can work on when you feel the need.

Yeah - I'm sure I have time for those Mick... I'm supposed to be getting the Rangie finished, and SWMBO's Rangie has just **** an airspring, so I have that to do as well.

I am more than happy to pop over and have a cuppa and discuss how you are going with things. You working on the Inter tomorrow???

So, while at my mates workshop today, and had a bit of time to spare & the Series III was calling me, so I pulled the LH front wheel off to see what condition the brakes are in. Thought it could be a bit tough for a start as the drum retention screws were a tad tight, and had been butchered in the past. A big hammer and the impact screwdriver sorted them out, and the drum was persuaded off to reveal what lay beneath. Well, I'm pretty happy as it turns out - on this side at least, the shoes have plenty of meat on them, and the drum is in good nick and I'm not even going to need to machine it. Everything is a little gummed up, but should clean up ok. Pulled the wheel cylinder out, but haven't got it apart yet - like everything else, it is gummed up and needs a bit of TLC. I had to go and do some real work so that's where I have left it, but I think I should be able to get it to stop again without too much issue.

Like always - don't tell SWMBO...

Edit - I really need to find a suitable name for it soon, so I can address it properly.

    In a quandary...

I have reached a crossroads on this and don't know which way to turn... My original thoughts were to get this sorted and back on the road the way it looks, and with minimal intervention, but as there are a couple of major hurdles to overcome, I'm starting to wonder if I shouldn't do a complete resto...

One of the crossmembers is crunched big time, and after looking at this carefully and (more importantly) getting the metal fab guy who is going to make the new one and weld it in to have a look - I may have to nearly strip the whole vehicle to do this.

That side doesn't worry me - I have the room where it is to do this, but I'm now thinking it would pay to do a bit more. Where the vehicle is at my mates workshop, I have instant access to a sand blasting booth (big enough to park a truck in), full paint booth & metal fabrication/folding/machining...

Being that I have all that at my disposal, should I go the whole hog while I have the body off, and do the chassis completely? That would obviously lead to other things, and from there it isn't a stretch to pretty much a complete rebuild...

I sort of wanted to keep it original, but now I'm thinking otherwise...

    Thoughts/advise????

    Cheers - Gav.
