Quick update. Had a few hours spare at my mates workshop just before Christmas, so I found myself getting the fuel system sorted. If I left the engine for any amount of time, I would have to pour fuel down the carby to get it running again - power piston in the carby was doing nothing. Ran a kit through it, replaced the fuel line to the tank - I had been running it from a small drum under the bonnet, removed, cleaned and refitted the fuel pump/bowl and now it starts easily and runs very smoothly. Bit of smoke out the exhaust, but not worried about that at the moment.

Coolant system Is next, as it won't hold water for more than a week or so. Can't see any obvious leak, but I will strip everything out, clean everything, replace the hoses and see what I find after that. The rad looks in pretty good nick, so it could be something stupid like a loose hose clamp or something.

May have a chance to finish the disk brake mock up these holidays, and if I do, I'll fit it up to the vehicle and see if it is all going to work in practice.

Oh, if anyone has a brake booster for a series III for sale, let me know.

    Cheers - Gav.

I visited a fellow a couple of weeks ago. He had some brake boosters from America. He was going to use them on his disk brake conversion. I got a few pics to show you.

I reckon you should take the minimalist approach with it. The paint isn't too bad. It looks a pretty neat machine as it is.

    G'day Gav,

There are two new brake boosters for sale on eBay at the moment. No links to the sellers.

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

Wow, it's been a while since I've been here...

Nothing really to report, but I have a quick question - where would I find the chassis number on this vehicle?

    Cheers - Gav

Been doing a bit over the last couple of days - a big thank you to Mick_Marsh for his help.

One thing I need to sort is a clunking noise it makes while reversing. All quiet going forward in any gear, but a clunk, clunk, clunk in reverse. Can't work out exactly where it is coming from - any ideas?

    Cheers - Gav.

Mmm - could be. The park brake works and releases well though - it is the only form of braking that it has at the moment.

If it was dragging slightly - like I was using it as a brake to keep the car a a safe speed.. could that make that sort of noise?

Re chassis number, either front right dumb iron on the flat outer plate that the front spring bolts to or on the rear left spring hanger. Should be on the small folded section of the hanger that's welded to the chassis...

Re reverse gear... They are a straight cut gear mounted in the side of the gearbox. They don't like speed or power (ever), and have a habit of loosing teeth.. Ran a V8 2a in the UK for several years.. Broke a reverse gear tooth within the first few months of fitting the V8, and it survived making the clunking noise you describe...

6 cylinder transport makes sense now....

Another small but heavy step happened today - 1,500KM from the vehicle...

The 'new' engine for it - a Rover 6 cylinder - is now in my trailer at Glenreagh ready to come home with me. It's condition is unknown but it has a brand new clutch on it which was a bonus. It has at least one known 'issue' - that is a tap stuck in number 6 spark plug hole, so not sure what else I will find when I clean it up and pull it apart.

For the price it doesn't really matter, it was a bargain.

A big thanks to Keith and Dave for getting it from Gympie to Glenreagh for me.

Here it is ready to be transferred from one trailer to the next. I'm sure some pics and video will turn up on how this was achieved.

For those that know me, you may be aware that one of the deals I had to make with my darling wife to secure my 101 is that other things had to go - including the series III...

I made the deal in good faith, and have been very happy with the 101, but deep down I really wanted to keep the series as a project, but a deal is a deal....

Until.... A reprieve from the most unlikely of places. My Son is 16 and will have his learners soon. He loves the 101, and all things Land Rover and came up with a cunning plan the other day - we broke this to SWMBO last night.

It went something like 'Mum - I know what vehicle I want as my first car'. 'What's that then?'. 'A series Land Rover.... and I know where one is that's really cheap...'

After a bit of discussion it was agreed that when I have all the other jobs done around the house, and a couple of cars gone - My Daughters car, and when the Rangie is running and sold, I can bring it home from my mates place and begin the restoration with my son - pretty cool eh?

So, my original plan was a preservation, but it may turn into a restoration yet - it depends on what my son wants out of it, but I'm thinking disk brakes, etc. He know it will be slow, noisy and uncomfortable, but if he gets sick of it, it just means I'll get it back again - win/win...

It will be a while before I kick off with all this, but I'll post again once I have a spot on the garage cleaned out and have it tucked away ready to start on.

Did I mention my Wife is awesome??? - she really is...
