    Spanners & threads

    Hello again from Brisbane.

Another quick question from a S3 novice. Do S3 Land Rovers generally have a universal thread type for nuts, bolts and what have you?

Basically the '74 ute that I recently bought is the "newest" Land Rover that I have actually owned or had much direct experience with. The others ranged from 1954 SWB through to 1972 LWB. The 1954 S1 was the one that I probably spent the most time actually pulling apart and re-assembling, and that was years 40 odd years ago on the farm.

With any or all of these, there was an array of BSF, Whitworth, AF, SAE and the odd feral metric nut or bolt encountered, depending on what was being attacked and who had bolted what onto the vehicles (e.g. spray rigs, gun racks, wheel carriers etc). So, my late Dad's tool box had an assortment of spanners, sockets, impact drivers etc that covered most of the range and you just ferreted around until you found something that fit...... Or borrowed it off a cousin up the road should the need arise.

Well most of that kit went with the last clearing sale and all I presently have is SAE and metric tools, albeit a fairly comprehensive set. Should I be thinking that this is going to be stretched at some not so distant date?

    Cheers,

nope that should just about cover you...

LR used at various times over the 60+ years any of the following systems:- BSW, BSF, BSP, BA, UNC, UNF, UNS, Metric. May even have used NP somewhere.

My S3 has fasteners requiring metric; AF and BS spanners.

It can be a bit of a pest to work on as consequence; but if you buy some spanners from 2BA up to about 1/2" BS it should cover you, given that you already have the metric and AF sizes,

I got a few BSW spanners before I started pulling Bella apart, but mostly used a 1/4" drive metric/af socket set on the body work

Guy's the attached is a list and photo of everything in my original toolkit from 1976 (except I left off the feeler gauge from the list and the pressure gauge is not in the photo). To the best of my memory there was nothing else and I've not added anything else over the years.

Generally in pulling the big meccano set apart I used AF spanners with a smattering of others that I had access to (I too had a dad with a big collection of miscellaneous tools).

    Cheers
