Tried the CC recommended method (adjusting the distributor to max revs at idle and then retarding a little), but the first test drive produced loud clattering whenever the engine was asked to pull. Re-adjusted the distributor but not quite enough- still got clattering although now only under heavy load. Retarded it just a little more and got solid pulling without any pinging. This was a fair way back from the position just slightly retarded from max revs.
Easter at Melrose will give me a chance to see what sort of fuel consumption we get on the highway.

that would mean the mix is off, with the mix on the money you wont get a big change in revs,
if the mix is lean you can get quite a large variation of engine speed with small movements of the dizzy
if the mix is rich you need large variations of dizzy to get small changes of revs
if your bang on its right in the middle of both
unfortunately working it all out is a little hit and miss and there are dozens of things that can contribute to making tuning more difficult that it needs to be.

Pulling a camper trailer weighing about 750kg and working the box to maintain best possible speed we got 18 l/hk (about 15 mpg) on the way up to Melrose. Which is about what I expected. Will check the colour of the plug deposits in the next couple days to get some clue as to whether the mixture is about right.
After that exercise, we have decided to only use Sandy on camping trips where we don't take the camper as dragging it along is too much like hard work!!
