    Pinion seals

    Hi all,

I got a spares box when I bought my 1975 SWB SIII. I've got two seals, one of which has part number R-FRC 4586 stamped on it. The other was is a wee bag with a sticker with the same part number less the R prefix.

This comes up as a pinion seal but both are quite different. See attached photos. One has the spring circlip on the 'male' lip, the other on the back 'female' lip.

Anyway, just looking for some advice on where these fit. I'm looking for a rear seal for the transfer box, just in front of the handbrake.

    Thanks Wolfman!

Are they just different types that fulfill (using that word loosely, considering we are talking oil tightness of landrovers here) the same purpose?

Anyone happen to know the part number for the transfer pinion oil seal?

I was bored so I looked it up:

    Land Rover Alternate part numbers

FRC 1780. (Provided you are still talking about a series III)

As to the different types of seal in your spares box - over the years different groups have formed opinions as to what sort of seal is better than the original in various places. With the vast variety of standard seals, that's why you have two different types of seal for the same purpose. Like using RTC3511 (RRC hub seal) on Disco /defender hubs - when you use them you have to override the outer lip (Like one of your seals) and drive it down to the base of the hub. The actual sealing lip runs in a similar spot to the original.

Well, I did say I was bored.

Just in case you are like me and still catching up on some computer skills, you may note an underlined "address" included in Langy's second last post. That is a link. Click that and that will take you to the site he used.

Just enter FRC 1780 into a google.com search. The first entry I get is a crowd in the UK called Pegasus who tell you what it is and are happy to take 60p off you (plus freight) to send one to you. The second entry is the site Langy referred to - that has a list of alternative numbers.
