To holden 186 or not to holden 186?

    Hi all,

Last year I purchased 'Lucy' - an immaculate, licensed '81 Series III 2.3 petrol LWB wagon with a dodgy engine and transfer case for only $1,000. Good buy, or so I thought.

So far I have shelled out $4,800 to have the engine and transfer case rebuilt which was still worth it to me ,given the immaculate condition of the entire car.

Recently my gearbox started playing up and now I cannot select 3rd or 4th gear while the car is moving, but can while the car is stationary and idling, or turned off?

So, being not very mechanically minded I started fishing around for parts and found an older series landy ute with a recon Holden 186 that has a really sweet gearbox and clutch set up too! Runs like a dream!

The guy only wants $1,000 for it and it has new brakes, 5 good rims and tyres, new suspension and a few other goodies that I'd like for my rig... if they will fit?

So, do I buy it and do the conversion? Is it worth it and what is involved? Or, do I just nab the ute for the $1,000, take the parts I need and flog off the recon 186 to someone else?

Alternately, can anyone advise me on what might be the problem with my gearbox or where to source another one in Perth, WA?

Any Help would be greatly appreciated as always,

    I.L.L.

I think I'd be keeping the original rebuilt engine and just fix your gearbox

It would be worth more to be kept original especially if it's in top condition.

Most of the bits off the older one will fit, although some may not be exactly the same. Like jerryd, I think you would do better to retain the original engine, especially since you have reconditioned it. By far the simplest thing to do would be to fix the gearbox. If it was recently overhauled, a discussion with the person who did this is probably in order! It may be a very simple fix.

If that is not productive, it is possible to fit the gearbox out of the older ute - there are a couple of catches that may exist, however. If the ute is a Series 2a not a Series 3, you will need to swap the bell housing or change the clutch mechanism - and the 2a box only has synchromesh on 3 and 4. Also, if the ute was originally a six, the bell housing will have to be swapped, as the four and six bell housings are different. But unless the ute is a Series 3 and was originally a four, fixing your original box is almost certainly easier.

    thanks jerryd,

i have considered the value of the car with and without the engine and from that perspective it's a no brainer. i guess in my fantasy world it would be nice to have a sweet 186 on gas with an overdrive so that i actually enjoy the fact that she is my every day driver! decisions decisions!!!

    thanks john,

im thinking i might take ur advice and just fix the existing box. it was the transfer case that was overhauled and not the gearbox, however another email i received said it could be as simple as the oil level in the gearbox or a syncro hub needs replacing? here's hoping!

I've just been through the process of fixing my broken S2a gearbox (snapped main shaft) and they're a pretty simple thing. I had a donor gearbox to steal parts from, so that helped, but parts aren't too hard to come across. There's a guy up in Rolystone that regularly advertises series gearbox parts in the Quokka. If the synchro hub 3rd and 4th for S3 is same as synchro hub for 3rd and 4th of S2a, then I have one lying around here if you need it.
