    Stage 1 FWH!!

Just getting aquainted with my '81 stage1....
It is in awesome mechanical condition, body was a bit scruffy but a days sanding and painting in 2 pack now looks the part.
A previous owner has fitted free wheeling hubs.... on a permenant 4x4 system!
The box is LT95 with centere diff lock, as per early rangies.
The beast only drives with hubs locked or free with centre diff locked.
It seems totally pointless or am I missing something?
If I get rid of the FWH's can I just use rangie stub axels or series ones? Help needed!
    Thanks
    Dave

haha sounds exactly like a description of my stage 1 but with no FWH

well without the front hubs engaged and the centre diff out, the front driveshaft will just spin freely as per the action of the centre diff. i would recommend that you put conventional drive flanges back on it, or keep them locked and run it as it was intended with constant 4wd with open centre diff. The transfer case on the back of the LT95 is really the weak link in the drivetrain and many people say it wont put up with much abuse...

    some pics would be great!

As I thought, do I need Rangie 10 spline stubbies or series ones?

You don't need either. What you need is another pair of driveflages, same as on your rear axles. Or just leave the freewheel hubs locked.

When the first constant 4wd 'cruisers came out I saw a couple that blokes had installed FWH on, right off the showroom floor! Their theory was it would improve fuel economy. Perhaps your PO had a similar crackpot idea?

    Cheers,

As Bill/Wagoo said, you need a pair of 24 spline drive flanges. Any S3 109" should have these fitted F+R as standard.

A reason forr fitting the FWH may have been to be able to use low range on paved surfaces. I have quite a steep driveway and when reversing heavy trailers using low range saves riding the clutch the whole time

A more likely reason is that the dealer had a very good salesman! (bigger margin on accessories)
