Glad to hear of your success, Lionel. A good outcome.

    G'day Alan,

Thank you for your reply. Yes I scored a success with Baldrick.

Now in the cold and clear light of day I found out why Rowan's reverse switch was bypassed. Rowan’s gearbox must have had some work done on the reverse selector and there is a bit of vertical metal - like a little raised leg is missing. On Bladrick's gear reverse selector the little piece of vertical metal pushes on and activates the reverse switch. So Rowan’s reverse selector does not press on the switch to complete the circuit when reverse is selected.

Oh well nothing that a small piece of metal angle iron and a bolt won't fix! Lucky that I have the tunnel still off so that job will be easier.

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

So that's what it supposed to look like

    Hello All,

I managed to track down a couple of diagrams which showed all the intricate little components involved. It turns out Rowan only had less than half the parts shown in the diagram - no wonder some of the descriptions were a bit confusing, I only had half the picture.

The red arrows show what I had left. So I bent back the locking tabs, undid the bolts and then removed the bracket. I then used the bracket as a guide to where the holes for the bolts should go and fabricated up a 50 mm wide piece of angle iron. One side had its length reduced so it cleared the gear selectors and had a tab which engages the reverse switch when reverse is selected. The other, longer side is the part that bolts to where the complex bits used to go.

I just have to remove the wires from the toggle switch in the centre console and hook them on to the new reverse light switch that is screwed into the gear selector mount.

Thank you everyone for contributing to this thread and answering my questions. I think I have written somewhere else how some jobs seem like they would be so simple and should only take 10 or so minutes

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

    Voila move this lever here

    Hello All,

I removed the vertical console panel and disconnected the rocker switch which controlled the reverse lights bypass switch and removed the spade fittings. Then I connected the spade fittings to the top and bottom of the reverse light switch. Yes the proper one that is mounted in the gear shift mount. I selected reverse and with the ignition on I walked around to the back of Rowan and hey presto voila and abracadabra I had two nice shiny reverse lights. I went back to the cab and shifted the gear stick out of reverse and then walked to Rowan's back and no shiny lights. Walked back to the cab and selected reverse..... Two shiny lights - Yes I did check them out and admire them a couple times

Check the photos out! A couple show my modified piece of angle iron bolted to the reverse selector which engages the reverse switch. Then some nice shiny lights! On the left hand side the smaller glow to the right of the reverse switch is the red reflector bouncing the camera flash back.

The lamp units and the reflectors are protected by a rectangular galvanised steel boxes to stop them being broken by the tailgate. When I got Rowan each rear lamp unit had broken or cracked lenses. Plus a Heinz variety of different lamp units too.

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

    Update

    Hello All,

It turned out that while the angle iron bracket I made did engage the reverse switch it sort of prevented a couple of gears like 1st and 3rd from being engaged. So I asked Pop058 - Paul if there was a reverse bracket and springs on one of his parts vehicles. Happily there was - bar one broken spring. I ordered some new springs from Victoria. As a result of that I can now engage my reverse lights and also select 1st and 3rd gear

I will just have to get the speedo back in - work on the front brake wheel cylinders; fit the correct sized carburettor and inlet manifold; sort out the accelerator linkages; get a new exhaust system fitted; install my dual brake system and track down a supplier for a set of inertia reel seat belts ... then I will have a Land Rover fully road worthy and on the road.

    Kind Regards
    Lionel
