Oh well just sent the Landy to a garage to check on a leaking (living on Kangaroo island and having the Perraka shop shut has forced me to take it there) SWIVEL housing and the following things have come up.

Leaking ALL places that has oil!!!!
    Seat belts need replacing
    New tyres
    Gear housing needs replacing
    Window wippers need replacing
Adding in all the oil that needs replacing a grand total of
Not evening including a tune up on thwe old bird

    2550 AU$ !!!!!!!

    What i am asking is!!

Can i do some of this myself???
Is there anyone near to KI who could Help

You can do all of this if your mechanically minded. Replacing the tyres is easier to take to a specialist but the wipers, oil seals and the gearbox is all pretty easy on a series. The swivel housing should just be a few seals if it's just leaking oil but if there's visible damage get it checked out. The seat belts are a few bolts but not sure if your allowed to replace them yourself. You can replace the brakes yourself aswell but you'll need patience with them.

    Hi Perry,
Not very merkanikally minded myself, but landies are like giant meccano sets and relatively easy to work on compared with modern cars. But you need a copy of THE GREEN BOOK (workshop manual- you can download parts of it from various net locations). And a collection of spanners of all types (including some Whitworth). If your landy is not something you rely on for daily transport then take her off the road for a while and have at it is my recommendation. A lot of that quote will be labour cost.

I do la bit myself, but get advice from knowledgeable people on this forum when I need to. I occasionally get things done by the local chap (PCB landrovers- I can also recommend him- and a good source of parts) when it looks beyond my competence.

I've found there are many shops in Oz selling parts for Series Landies, and some in the US and UK that can do pretty good deals even allowing for the freight cost- especially with our dollar being so high. I recently got some tailgate seals from the UK, and new top door hinges and mirrors from a mob here in Oz.

If you like tinkering, have the time, and can afford to have her off the road for a while, then have a go.

    Coop
PS My swivel hubs leak and the balls are pitted, so I just check the oil level more often....

There's a thread showing in detail the overhaul of a Stage 1 Series III's swivel hubs. Some differences from the earlier Series III, apparently, but shows the process in great detail- lots of pictures.
It's the Series III Stage 1 swivel overhaul posted here:

I've noted this for when I have to do this job...
