    Stage 1 questions

A friend rang me today who has been Land Roverless for quite a few years, but is now keen to re-enter the fold. He looked at a Stage 1 and was very interested in it, but had never seen one before and wondered if it was a common model.

I told him what I knew about the Stage 1, and want to double check my facts. I told him the body parts and rear axle are almost all Series 3 and the mechanicals are Range Rover, except the front axle. Is this correct, and are bits available for the front axle? Are there any other bits that don't fit from the rest of the Land Rover range?

It also has low oil pressure, but he seems to think it could be the gauge. Is this a common problem, is it likely to be the oil pump?

Where are Compliance Plates on Stage 1s?

Stage 1 is Standard Series 3 aft of the firewall except for the Diff ratio and gearbox/transfer case/handbrake, which are Rangerover (LT95). Forward of the firewall they are basically Series 3 except for the engine, but with Defender bonnet and front panel, and numerous other changes. Most importantly, the front axle is specific to the Stage 1, although it uses standard hubs, six cylinder brakes and Rangerover diff. Note that late Series 3, including Stage 1, have different stub axles and wheel bearings.

There are also a number of minor differences in equipment levels, typically having as standard bits that are optional on other models.

The only bits that seem to be hard to find are front axle parts. (Maybe a few other bits that would only interest rivet counters)

in reguards to low oil pressure...

if its an original smiths gauge the simple answer to it is it probably is faulty if the motor runs fine. but does the oil pressure warning light flicker on @ idle? stay on constantly? typical low oil pressure noises like tappet noise? whats the condition of the oil? theres many things to think about...

as far as i know the original sender on these is a bimetal strip type duty cycle type thing you have to be aware of when fault finding
