As far as I know you have 1 year after it expires.
What I do is buy it in 3 or 6 month blocks.
We have 3 cars here on full rego. Both Land Rovers are over $1000 each and the French Connection is about $900
For example: first rego on the Stage 1 was just over $600 including a very small amount for stamp duty and ACT plates. That was 6 months worth.
By staggering them across the year the pain isn't as high. There is a small premium for doing it this way but not too bad.
Works for us. So far.
Tim - as John said - if you let your rego expire you can leave the vehicle unregistered for up to 12 months and do not have to return the plates. You can register is at any time in the 12 month period without the need for a roadworthy - just pay the fee - the minimum rego period is 3 months.
Many people leave their vehicle unregistered and if needed to be used register it for three months and then let it lapse until it is needed again at long as it is before the 12 months is up.
If you do not re-register as the system expects you will get a reminder a couple of weeks later then nothing - it is up to you.
If you let it run past the 12 months then all bets are off and you are expected to return the plates and then get a roadworthy etc to re-register.
I let my Freelander rego run out in Aug 2011 and just paid the fee for 3 months in Jul 2012 and then sold it.

Just returned from the AECLRF at Grabine - great couple of days and a couple of firsts for me:
- the first 'long' trip for the vehicle out of ACT (400km round trip)
- the first time overnight 'camping' in my camper trailer.

On the way home mine was pretty ordinary and awful on the hills - until I called into Mobil at Crookwell and 'accidently' filled it with 95 octane unleaded (instead of the usual 91). Hills that I was slowing down on I was suddenly powering up them at 90kph and I was cruising at 105kph... I have no idea what it thinks it was doing but I was pretty happy - until I got stuck behind a Range Rover RRS on the Gunning to Sutton road. He soon pulled over and I then caught up with and was stuck behind an old motorbike/sidecar combo that was hitting 70kph on the downhill slopes...
