Always use the best petrol available. My Disco and my Rover P6 get better economy on 98 PULP and heaps more oomph with better idling, etc.

In my hilux it was best to run it on 98 better power and economy. around town though it sometimes did not matter so much.
sometimes good fuel is the best and easiest and sometimes cheapest way of maintaining your engine and prolonging its life, same can be said with oil too.
I'm still driving around on the tank full I got in Crookwell on Sunday - and that is AFTER the 'high' speed run from Crookwell to Canberra.
Curiouser and curiouser...
I did some testing of different octane fuels in my bike over a run to work that included 50, 60, 80 and 100km/h zones.
During the testing period, I tried to determine the difference in economy rather than power.
I found that if 98 octane was no more than 12 cents per litre more than standard(is it 91?), then it was more economical on a dollars per km basis.
I wonder if anyone has done the same sort of thing in a car? I couldn't talk my missus into putting 98 in her '05 lancer, so I didn't get to find out if it was the same result.
In my P6, I consistently returned 4mpg better economy over the same roads; same driver; similar weather. This equated to about 1/4 of a tank fuel saving on one 300km trip, or about 16 litres. 16 litres of ULP in those days was about $10.24. The extra cost of the PULP for a full tank was about $3-96; therefore a saving on a full tank of $6.28. The saving of $6.28 was less important to me then and now, over the improvement in performance.
With my 3.9 Disco I foolishly believed what was written in the handbook, that high octane fuels had no benefit. Once again regular trips to Perth on ULP used 1/2 a tank (45 litres). When I came to my senses 2 years later and changed to PULP, I consistently used 1/4 tank for the same trip with a noticeable increase in performance on hills and better idle.
The only way to test it of course is for drivers to trial both fuels consistently for about 2-3 months and see if it works for them,

What - what the speedo said or what the GPS said - there is at least 50kph difference.
