A freshen up for Willy

The plan for freshen up 2.0 I think is... as Babicat suggests a Mexican rebuild, (as i read somewhere on the forum)..

Whip the head off, drop the sump out, cut the ridge off the cylinders with a ridge reamer.. push the pistons out the top, hone the cylinders a little to clean them up. New rings and possibly big end a little end bearings. Easy!... right ?

Hopefully this will buy willy a couple of years until he get's his ground up rebuild resto... I'm not looking for anymore performance improvements I just don't like being smoked out with exhaust and burning oil fumes:p I am very surprised he starts and runs so well as he is.. the only thing I do hope is that this solves some of his overheating problems, i think now are a cause of buggered rings...

surgery starts this arvo, I'll see what i'm in for better when he's opened up... I did measure the cylinders when i did the original freshen up, these were my findings:

#1 - 90.50mm
#2 - 90.52
#3 - 90.52
#4 - 90.58 !?

I understand now that I should have measured not in a single place but at different axis and heights.. So my original measurements may not be very useful..
I'll get back to you all this arvo with some pics or maybe even a time lapse If i'm clever enough to pull it off..

I don't see how low compression can affect the engine temperature!

If your engine is a petrol, check the ignition advance with a timing light. Inspect the radiator for crumbling fins; obvious blockages inside in the tubes and blow the external core down with compressed air to get rid of dust and grass, etc.

Whilst you have the engine apart, it may be a good idea to take out the core-plugs and clean the water jacket with air and probing instruments,

While burning oil may be rings, in my experience valve stem seals are a more common cause in this engine. Should be easy to distinguish - rings give most smoke at full throttle and high engine speed, valve stem seals when accelerating after a period of idling. The other clue to rings is compression pressures (obviously) and blowby resulting in oil leaks everywhere despite your best efforts to fix them. But this can also result from removing the positive crankcase ventilation or its being faulty (blocked).

Thanks John, Here's a video of Willy I've just uploaded. You can't see it very well but you can hear the exhaust gas releasing from the hose, I did this another time on a sunny day and could see the exhaust gas... This is blow by is it not?


Exhaust escaping past the rings and creating pressure in the sump which comes up through the push rods and out the hose in the video.. ?

I'm running out of time to do anything to him now, so I'll get myself a compression tester and see what figures I come up with early in the week. I have little doubt it is the rings but I'm more than happy to be proved wrong if it means I don't have to pull the motor apart!

This is blowby, but does not seem to be too bad - there is always some blowby, although it is difficult to tell how much from the video.

Note that excessive blowby means the compression rings are worn or damaged or the bore is very worn. Oil burning due to rings is because the oil control rings are worn, stuck or broken, or the bore is glazed. While the two often occur together, it is possible to have oil getting past the rings but still have good compression, or poor compression but burning no oil. As I suggested, when the engine smokes is the best way of telling where the oil is getting into the combustion chamber.
