Further searching shows it could even be a Toyota FJ40 72' model rear axle...........
I'm starting to lean towards it being toyota though.
EDIT: And we Have a WINNER ! It's a Toyota FJ 40

Of course this then begs the question as to what the front diff is, and whether it is the same ratio? From my distant memory, the FJ40 came with several different diff ratios, none of which are the same as Series Landrovers. It is likely that it also has the front axle from the same vehicle however.
John
yes correct early 40 series 3 spd box semi floater diff. the diesel iirc had 3.7 ratio, but petrol 4.11.
time to refit the 8ha salisbury rear end, should be reasonably easy to get one, and some shocks:D
jc
I'll learn more today as the plan is to pull the body off to get a better look at the rest of it, I'm leaning toward them being the same since I've had the front hubs locked in and nothing went bang :wasntme:
Funny you mention the 4.11 ratio, the front housing has a part number starting with 41111 it's probably just a coincedence ?
TBH I'm considering keeping the fj40 gear, except I'll be rebuilding them the way they should have been done the first time. I can only assume they were put on because the ford engine puts down too much torque  I don't know.
I'll also need new leaf springs as some of the lower leaves have snapped off at the front and the leaf eyes are deformed quite a bit. Parabolics, are they worth it on a 40/60 off road/road truck. So it'll be new suspension all round.
I'll have to check it out but the brake booster could be off the same donor FJ40?
I'm glad I desided to pull it down before buying parts because the plan was to convert the front end to disc brakes.
I think I've found a name for this truck. "Frankenstien" Frank for short.
For the people that were interested about the brake booster conversion from a couple of pages ago.
It's off a Toyota FJ40. Dual Diaphram.

The same booster on a FJ40 as factory
I have to say I love these S3's I'm learning so much from the forum members and research, so far I've learnt about early Ford engines and Toyota Axles........
I can't wait to get to the LR stuff!
