so you are taking the wheels off but the rest off the car will be complete sitting on the axle stands?
Hello from Brisbane.
Probably refecting my naivety here, but it has been a fairly long while since I pulled a car apart from below.
After more than a year of sitting idle in the street my 88" has finally progressed to the workshop under the house to begin a fairly long renovation process.
I need to get it off the ground for a complete brake replacement and sundry other tasks in and around the suspension and running gear. To do that I have 4 axle stands which to date have never been used.
My question is the best placement position for the 4 axle stands for safety and getting access to the working areas. Should the stands sit under the springs or under the axle housings front and rear? If the axle housings are better where exactly are the best points relative to the springs?
Looking forward to your advice.
Cheers,

depends on the jack stands but generally the best place for the axle stands is under the axle just outside of the leafs

That's the plan - remove and upgrade the brakes, backing plates and all in one operation and based on the abstract oil pattern on the floor likely may need to do the various swivel and axle seals while at it.
Back on the farm in the 80s we would have set it up on 4 solid ironbark blocks, probably located under the chassis longitudinal rails. Don't have access to that option these days.
Cheers,
depends on what your axle stands are set up for if they are the typical ones you buy I would do what Blknight has said but we have a bit on the end that goes around the chassis so I go front and rear for best stability
Mine is up on 4 stands as we speak I will take some pics today
Here is where I have placed my stands.
I have quite large 4 tonne stands up the front and these were difficult to place between the jack and the tyre.
If anyone has a better way to do this please let me know.

Hello again and thanks for the various responses to my initial query.
I put my truck up on the stands this afternoon and it is sitting quite stably - it is on a level concrete floor.
Getting the rear stands under the axle housing between the springs and the brake plates is easy enough. However, there isn't sufficient clearance between the springs and swivel hubs on the front axle to do that - so set them under the spring centres - otherwise, would have to put them directly under the axle casing flanges as seems to be the case in the photos in the post above. Decided against that because it would make it more difficult to access the flange bolts if I need to replace the swivel seals etc.
Seems OK anyway.
Cheers,
I have the luxury of having more than one set of stands.
I lift the back end, support it on the leaf pads, remove the wheels, jack it up a little more then place the jackstands as per the front axle pics. If Im planning on pulling the axles I use the rear cross member just outboard of the chassis rails and use a speedy clamp to clamp the jack stand head to the chassis rail.
The front end I do as per the previous pictures. If Im doing the front axle out I support the vehicle under main chassis rails level with the gearbox/engine cross member.
