Repair - hole cut in side

Hi I just bought a cheapie 1972 109, just to do a cheap simple restoration on and put on club rego and drive it around in summer with no roof.

My concern at moment is that somewhere along the past 40 years a toolbox has been cut in the side, and the door presumably lost. Is this a common alteration?

Just after opinion of repair as if it was steel id just weld it up -
    - pop rivet patch over it and forget about it
    - put a door back on it maybe aluminium chequerplate
    - replace panel

    Cheers
    Rob

can it fit a jerrycan in it? i have seen jerry holders in the sides behind the door about that size with just a single bar across the centre to stop it coming out (the hole was 90˚ to that so the jerry stood vertically), looked good. maybe you could do something similar.

you could replace that panel but a lot of work. you could get a whole new tub , good luck finding one. or you could plate it up but it may look crap , i would make the most of it to use as something useful

Put a door on it, caravan supplies have them, means you can access the toolbox after you put a false floor in the back. I have to remove the false floor and everything on it including the fridge to access my spares stash

Yeah it's probably too small for Jerry can, might just run with a door, might be handy.
Patching it up or trying to hide it would probably make it worse.
Thanks for responses will start to get some bits and pieces together, starting with dash, seats, and getting it to run would be nice as well!

    It was a common modification.

What usually happened was the cover over the toolbox inside was moved outside (with the lip flattened out) so cupboards or a fridge or bed could be mounted inside and you could still get to the tools like the jack out without having to unload all your gear from inside.

If you look at the perenties they have external toolbox doors in those places standard, but with more weatherproof design.

Found this door that fit in the spares and the holes line up for it so I gather thats were it went. Looks like one of the toolbox lids, except it has one corner of frame shortened to make it fit. Also has some other brackets on it not sure what they are are.

It was originally red, does that make it possibly ex fire of some description and perhaps this door is related?

Found wiring harness has been cut off in firewall as well, so much more work now... hope not too much else shows up (I am already aware I'm replaciing rear crossmember (not using the hack box section it has now) and one rigger)

It may also have been from the Post Office (PMG); a friend of mine had one,

Yes the P.M.G. were red ones but the division that became Telstra not the Post Office division.
