HELP! Series III Petrol killing me

Similar thing happened to my Rover car once - it turned out I had inadvertently blocked the breather for the carburettor float bowl. The engine ran until it used the petrol in the bowl and about 15 minutes later it would start and run again. Check how your carburettor bowl breathes and look for blockages,

Thanks Charlie - sounds same but not sure how the carb breathes if anyone cane help with a Zenith??

I had a similar problem with s111 2.6 lt I put electronic ignition in with the wrong coil went fine until the ignition module got warm then stopped a min latter it would go again put correct coil in no problems since;)

Ive got a working Zenith which I serviced some time ago. I had warpage issues and refaced the carb halves and emulsion block and it is going ok when I refitted it. I use a weber carb at the moment and it seems ok. Message me if you want to try the carb out. N'Hawk.

Thanks for that... I changed the coil to Lucas gold sport as it was the first thing I thought was wrong...but problem persisted. So ruled coil out (even tried switching terminals in case I had wrong way round)

Thanks Nighthawk would be great but I am in NZ. Fitting electric trickler today to see if that helps.

Well thanks all for the advice. Turned out to be a piece of silicon stuck in the pick up pipe. Didn't block it entirely but slowed the flow when load applied.

Refer to post #3 - seen it and heard of it many times - don't put silastic near anything in the fuel system as it loses adhesion and floats around in the tank, sucks up the fuel line, clogs pump, carburettor, etc. Too much is usually the cause and its the squeezed bit that will come loose. Can happen in the motor too with more disastrous results if overused on gaskets.

Even trickier are the spider bodies and berries! So you say how would a spider or wasp body get into the fuel. Well on properties and even service stations spiders and wasps get into the bowser nozzle:o. Along comes the person about to fill the tank - in goes the insect pretty dead. Movement of the fuel breaks up the body leaving the hard bits to eventually get sucked up the line. In a Series Land Rover if the tank has been belted on a rock from underneath damaging the pickup gauze filter put there to stop this sort of thing it becomes easy.

The berries (cottoneaster, etc) have a fascination for kids - they put them into the tank:mad:! Same result, vehicle will drive on the flat but the berries get sucked together constricting the flow on a hill when there is more demand - engine slows to a stop. Berries roll back, engine will start and run - often to the top of the hill and drive again till a suitable hill and the process starts again.
