    Gearbox Question

    G'day All,

I have reassembled the gearbox component of the transmission assembly and I can't seem to get neutral. It is also very hard to move the selectors- so much so that I have been reluctant to do so. Is it possible that one of the syncro rings is locked on or am I looking in the wrong direction. There is no oil in the box yet.

    Regards
    Marty.

I remember that my S1 box was very difficult to move until I fitted the gearstick and gave it a good clout with my hand. I presume the selector rods are clean and rust free? Sometimes a drift and hammer with a gentle tap, can be helpful to move the syncro hubs about.

Squirt oil over everything; replace the top cover and give it a try with the gearstick,

    Cheers Charlie

    Thanks Charlie,
I already have the gear lever on and it feels like I'm forcing the issue trying to change gears. Selectors are clean and rust free. The third/fourth selector will move but first/second feels very tight. I'll splash some oil around in there and see if that frees anything up.
    Regards
    Marty.

    Crisis averted!
I pulled the top cover and selectors off/out and after a bit of poking around, found that the cones for the second gear syncro ring had somehow locked together on the gear. A gentle bit of persuasion (yes Chazza- a clout) freed it up and I can now get all gears and neutral.

Not really sure how it happened but all seems well.
    Cheers
    Marty.

    UK mags

    Lionel,

Hello again from Zimbabwe - still enjoying my 30 day pass....

Not that it will answer your original question of how to diagnose a good/bad box when it isn't in a working machine - but one of the UK Land Rover mags had a 3 part illustrated series on overhauling a Series 3 gearbox a few months back. It was Land Rover Monthly and it was likely the April, May and June issues.

I have pdf copies if you would find them of any use.

    Cheers,

Don't try to run the engine with the top off the gearbox. Although it seems like it would be a simple way to see what's going on, all that actually happens is that the first and second gears pump the gearbox oil all over you in a spectacular but smelly and messy fountain.
    Ha ha!
