How to repair a broken hand brake lever

    Is this brake lever repairable?

It has broken along the crease. This is the second one in 7 years and the replacement also shows signs of stress fracturing.

Unfortunately, these are obsoleted now and finding good ones is increasingly difficult. I have looked at the 90/110 brake lever but the bracket is larger.

Is the metal too crappy for an effective repair on these?

In can't help you with any information other than maybe you should have posted in the 'Discovery' Land Rover section, although some-one may know, hope you get it sorted, cheers Dennis

Not sure why this is in the Series 3 section, but looking at the photo it should be possible to weld and reinforce the lever, although some ingenuity may be needed, as it is not clear how easy it is to remove the two pivots.

Probably because it is out of a series III

I don't know why it should be referred to a Discovery forum when it is out of a series III.

Because it does not look like a S3 handbrake lever, possibly explained by the fact that it is p/n NRC4041 out of a Stage 1. (Which certainly is S3, but is different - perhaps noting the vehicle it is out of might have been helpful.) My suggestion still stands - I can't see how the pivots are held, but it should be possible to remove them and if necessary make new ones. The handle, with the handgrip removed, could then readily be welded and reinforced with a saddle of sheet metal welded on. A bit fiddly, but not a major job, although a fair bit of labour if you are paying by the hour.

Unfortunately, they are dirty great rivets so they are not immediate removable. It is true that one might be able to new ones out of a mild steel.

The saddle might be doable and would probably make it stronger than the original. I think it'd have to be something I'd have a go at myself because the replacement part is $50 or less.

If it were me and someone said "It's not fixable" my reply is always "Challenge accepted!" I'd think about drilling out the rivets welding up the handle and then replace the rivets with a bolt or something of the sort IF it will all clear the seatbox etc. but in saying that I've never paid any attention to handbrake leavers....

On second thoughts just throw it away knowone NEEDS a handbrake

You need a handbrake to keep it from rolling when stopping on hills, such as to open a gate, especially if the battery is bad and stopping the engine means hand starting.

The advantage of repairing it is that you would be able to strengthen it - a consideration if you have already replaced it once, although I would also be looking for reasons for this (such as binding cable, oily brake shoes etc) as I have never heard of this problem before with any model Landrover - unlike gear levers!

True John, but remember when the Stage 1's were made, right in the midst of the bean counter period at Land Rover. Why pay for decent quality metal when cheap rubbish works too.

The first was already broken when I bought the truck, then the replacement broke after about 6 years. The second hand part I put in on the weekend has cracked paint on the same crease, so it will probably break at some point. I agree about strengthening, that is why I am looking at how to fix the now-spare-brake-lever rather than just chucking it out.
