Probably because you are not the first one to work on it. Series 3 probably should have either the Zenith 36IV or the Weber 34ICH but the Solex was on the same engine in the Series 2 so a previous owner may have thought it was a better option and may well have been right. All three Carbies work fine if set up and in good condition.

cause your vehicle is a meccano set and any thing you can dream of bolting into, onto, alongside of, instead of, inplace of or along with on your vehicle has been, at some time, by some one, Somewhere (and probably by someone like me).

your vehcile spans the test of time from 1948 till today, I'll bet somewhere theres a 1948 Series 1 with a bit out of a 2006 defender bolted to it just because it could be.

    2 choices here, either

    1. dont worry about it, get a solex rebuild kit and have at it or
    2. dont worry about it get a zenith 36iv and bolt that on instead.

Either way you're shortly to be within the hallowed halls of landrover mechanics, a tribe of people that are so lackadaisically laid back when it comes to things being other than as the book suggests they might be (and even as they were coming off the production line the blueprints and assembly instructions were viewed more as "a set of guidelines to be considered if you have the time and dont mind" rather than a set of "specifications and details to be regimentally adhered to") that opening the bonnet and seeing a hamster running in a wheel turning a generator to run electric motors in the wheels would garnish the same result as seeing a jet turbine engine, a flux capacitor and the warp core from the enterprise. That is to say very little other than once more promptly reaching for the manual and using it as somewhere safe to sit the coffee cup.

    Oh yeah, welcome to AULRO.

Loved your reply .. ye its my first rebuild/restore... the landy has been sitting for 8 years and started after a few turns :-) .. it needs a full strip and rebuild.

Will roverparts supply the carb kits?

    Thanks Craig

    Hello from Brisbane.

Yes, at least the galvanised hubcap went from 1948 through to late Defenders - so that bit at least is probably correct.

In the genes first to last.

    Hello from Brisbane.

Best to check the engine number.

The reality is that it more than likely isn't the original that left the factory in Lode Lane in 1977..............

My 1975 chassis and body turned up with a 1969 motor.

    Cheers,

You can put a kit through the carb, but I would be sending it to a carby specialist like Carburettor Specialists on Parramatta Road Burwood. Then ask them to do the lot, including bushing the shafts/case. Even a small amount of play can cost you heaps in leaking fuel and lost economy.

That is unless you have a small lathe and you can do things like bushing yourself.

BTW: there are people who prefer the Solex carby over both the Zenith and Webber units.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
