    S3 swb rego experiences

    Hi all.

My S3 swb ute (yellow sub) is now ready for rego, or so I thought.
Took it to the blue slip inspector (by trailer-too far from home to drive lawfully). He had a couple of issues about seats, seatbelt mounting points, front indicator/parks etc.
Nothing I couldn't have sorted out easily for the second inspection.

Except- and here in lies the lesson I learned when buying an unregistered vehicle:

    1. make sure the chassis number and compliance plate numbers match (mine didn't- instant referal to the RMS)
    2. Make sure your reciept quotes the chassis number on the chassis not the one on the compliance plate (fortunately mine does)
    3. Determine which mods (seats, belts, exhaust, engine etc) have been engineered and which haven't. Very expensive to engineer after the fact.

I went to the RMS and told them the problem of compliance plate/ chassis number mismatch and explained that it probobly occured when I assembled the vehicle from bitsa this and bitsa that. I assume a radiator shroud (?) with the offending compliance plate affixed was supplied by the PO.
The lesson is check them before you buy it!!
Fortunately the RMS determined that the vehicle (using the chassis number) was previously registered in NSW and was not a write off.
Their tech dept. then determined that it could be re-registered in NSW when the blue slip was passed without the offending compliance plate.
    Lucky!
If it had not been previously registered in NSW it could not have been registered at all as I cannot prove registration in another state.
I am now proceeding with the rectification of the faults and re-inspection.
Hopefully I will have a registered vehicle in a week or so.

Hope this helps for other newby's out there!
I suppose the warning signs are low price (or reserve), denial of any knowledge of the previous history and missing plates.

It is always a bit of an issue and a good lesson to learn. One person in Sydney recently bought an SIII 109 on Ebay, when he got it home there was no compliance plate. He contacted the PO and asked about the plate. The PO investigated only to find that the compliance plate had been pressure washed off before sale and was still lying on the ground. Lucky.

Then there are the vehicles that have never been registered, one of the 1948 model 80" in WA was sold to Boulder Mines and never registered only used on the mine site. Was definately entitled to be registered after being first sold in perth in 1949.

The ex-Army vehicles are another example, many farmers buy them at the Government Auctions and take them back to the farm. Us mad people them buy them back for restoration and it can be a difficult case to register as they do not exist in the registration database. An expensive exercise.

I have an S3 that is now down almost to just a chassis as I sell or use bits (bulkhead going shortly, I think). I bought it from the original owner - but it has never been registered. I do have the permit to drive it from the dealer to the property (near Young) however. I wonder if this would suffice for anyone who wants to rebuild using this chassis?

Is the requirement for previous rego in NSW only because of the compliance plate issue or some blanket rule there?

My series III has never been registered in Vic - none of the numbers match anything that has ever been registered there, which checks out with the PO story of bringing it down from NSW years before and only using it on the farm. Vicroads said that isn't a drama.

I bought a series three LWB from Victoria a couple of years ago and brought it back to N.S.W. Had no problems whatsoever getting a blue slip for it after getting a few repairs done. I have no idea what the registration history of the vehicle was, apart from being told by the previous owner that he bought it off someone in Cooryong about 12 months prior to me buying it. I was led to believe that it hadn't been registered for a number of years.

The actual registering of the vehicle through the R.M.S. was relatively painless with the only problem I did have was trying t get a C.T.P. green slip and comprehensive insurance for it. A few insurance companies didn't know what a Land Rover was and 'the computer said no' and others wouldn't insure it because it was either too old or because it had been modified (it's got a Holden engine in it).

    JDNSW,

Not sure if it would surfice but it is a form of rego isn't it.

    Bacicat,

purely because the compliance plate and chassis numbers were different-they recognised the chassis number

    Dobby,

I assume you have a compliance plate which matched the chassis number. I understand that in this case there is no problem, only when the plate is missing or incorrect.

Actually the mechanic issuing the blue slip couldn't find the chassis number so he just went by the compliance plate. I guess I was lucky to get away with it. Where is the chassis number supposed to be by the way?

Sound like you were very lucky!
That should have been a referral to the RTA I think
The chassis number on an S3 is on the chassis just above the rear left spring hanger.

Phil - is this the location for all series 3's? I've looked and looked and cant see anything - or even a scratch which may have been something in the past.

    cheers ,

    David.

As far as I know, all Australian assembled Series 2,2a and3 do. It is on the flat immediately above the top of the left rear spring shackle, but you may need to remove several layers of paint, and even etch the surface if it has been badly rusted or enthusiastically sanded at some stage.

The number is not there on UK assembled ones (RH front dumb iron, I think) and may be elsewhere on ones assembled in other countries. There is always the possibility it has had the rear chassis section replaced, of course, losing the number. In the past, some states would not have worried about this.
