My Series 3 Project

Well folks, the first meaningful pic for a long time. The new rear springs are in (not tightened) and the rear diff is in. The springs only came as a 4 leaf for the 109 wagon and you just pull the ones out you don't want. I'll have to remove 1 or even 2 once it's on its feet and is ready to go. It's an easy job to remove these with everything in position.

Tomorrow night is finding the bloody u bolt brackets and cleaning those and repainting them - and the brake line brackets. Still have to clean up the excess never seize and touch up some paint in that area.

I rekon that you need to replace the bump stops for some nice new (or possibly just clean) one!!!

I have been advised when reassembling the six cylinder head ensure water galleries (tubes ) are not blocked around valves as they will overheat them and cause early failure, not desired after all that work. I WAS TOLD THE TUBES CAN BE EXTRACTED AND CLEANED?
I think that is why most discarded an otherwise great motor and fitted a holden six in frustration but achieved a poorer substitute.

Thanks - the tubes are out now as the engine has been stripped down. When you have a look at how these work it's clear that you'll run into issues if you don't put them back. The block will be heading off for an acid dip and rebore as soon as the Pistons and bearings turn up. :)

This probably sums up the tale of what happened back in the 80's when my late Dad's six cylinder from the farm came back from an extensive engine overhaul at a well known agency in the Allyn River region. He finally gave up on it and was talked into fitting a Holden engine.

Ran like a true pig thereafter albeit with more apparent power.

Another piece to the puzzle turned up in the mail today. A set of 040" oversized Pistons for the engine. These puppies are quite rare now so imagine my surprise when an ad appeared here on AULRO last week advertising a full set including pins and rings. Needless to say I was on the phone and had purchased them within minutes.

A big thank you to 1950Landy who had these for sale and was an absolute Gentleman to deal with. :)

So, only have to find main, big end and cam bearings and off to the machine shop I'll go... Wonder what that little adventure will set me back.. :eek: On the bright side I've spoken to them and the owner is old School and has machined these blocks in the past, but he did admit it had been many years since one of these has past through his workshop. :D

I know how you've been pondering on what to do about this for a while now, so full steam ahead.

Another piece of the puzzle is now in the garage - I finally grabbed the set of tyres Mick88 has been storing for me since the group buy. :)

Had a fun weekend in Mildura while I was at it with SWMBO and had the biggest steak I've ever eaten at Micks place last night - we had a great time thanks mate. :)
