As mentioned it's one of Cookeys disk brake conversation kit. Comes with dual diaphragm booster, different master cylinder and different rear wheel cylinders to make a matched system.

It's s whole system rather than just front disks.

Total cost was around $2,500 IIRC.

He has had engineering sign off in NSW but how that translates in Vic, I'm still unsure but I'm not expecting it to be a hassle to get engineered here in Vic.

As for the calipers, not sure what model they are - Wilwood calipers are made in the US and are a big player in aftermarket brake parts over there - these area a 4 piston design and look and feel like a quality bit of kit. Looking at thier website - http://www.wilwood.com - the calipers that look similar to mine run to about $170 US each.

A very productive day on the car today. Cam has once again left me to post as he's buggered off to a mates place for a few cleansing ales. :D

So, as per the previous post showing a bench full of new goodies, we installed them today, along with the disk brake conversion that we got from Cookey. No dramas were had, and everything went together as it should. The brake conversion is a true 'bolt on' bit of kit and looks great, and having driven Cookeys series 3 with this conversion, I know they will work great too. :)

Still got a few things to do to finish the front end off entirely - I still need the drive flanges and lock washers for the hub nuts, the steering stop brackets I left off accidentally so I have to undo 1 bolt on each side to fit these, the main drag link is bent like a banana so I need to grab a new one before fitting the tie rods, a new steering damper,, flexible brake lines and that's about it.

Next up is the firewall clean and paint, so I can mount the new booster and pedal assembly and fit the new brake lines throughout the vehicle, then it's onto the gearbox, TC and engine.

That looks very nice.
They should stand the old girl on her nose if you have to use them in anger!

In reality I just want something that stops predicably with the young bloke driving it. While these aren't a 'safe' car to drive like a modern vehicle, I still want it to be as good as it can be.

Now, onto the power steering... ;)

I'm gathering parts for my P/S conversion as well, so far I have a 200tdi P/S pump.... I was thinking that a rangie P/S box would be a good way to go because it sits on the outside of the chassis and doesn't require hacking the chassis. Also thinking of using defender steering wheel/shaft etc because it should just bolt in.... hopefully. What direction are you heading in?

Yep, as Mick said - I'm looking at doing an electric power steering conversion from a Prius - I have all the bits, just need to get a steering shaft re splined and make up a couple of brackets.

Not sure how it will all go yet, I'll post some stuff up when I do it - like everything else now, the firewall is holding me up, so that's the next bit I'll have to concentrate on. I may dummy fit the steering box and shaft back tonight to take some measurements to make sure everything's going to fit - the motor and gearbox are quite large and will probably be seen hanging down under the dash, but as long as it doesn't interfere with the driving position I should be fine.

If it all works, I'll be getting it engineered (hopefully) when I get the brakes engineered. If the engineer doesn't like it, I'll just stick a standard shaft back in it and regroup... :D

"bastardisation" I'm passed worrying about that... check my thread on Frank. I thought about electric, but I want to eliminate all that sloppety-slop from the steering and get more "precise-ish" handling at the same time

Maybe you need to fix your steering then, they don't need to be sloppy - they just usually are due to age. A well rebuilt series steering system is quite precise and fairly light to steer anyway - ask Grey Ghost how the steering is on his series 2 now it's been rebuilt - 1" of movement of the steering wheel changes the direction of the vehcile now. :). I just want to make parking it a bit easier as it will be a daily driver.

You need to get the box, the steering relay and the swivel bearings/railko bushes, then the pre load spot on, then with all new tie rod ends, you get good steering. Get any of the first 4 wrong or not pay them the right attention will mean sub standard steering.

New bits for the steering box and relay are available and should be used. :)

Is PS really needed?
The 2A i am about to put on a club permit is in exceptionally good condition and the steering is as light as a feather with 750 x 16's on it. From memory i recall the previous owner telling me something about the fact that he fitted stainless steel "something or rather" in the railco's, but tha was five years ago and i didn't push the "save" button. ;)
I have not had them appart to see what has been done in there.
However if they currently reflect what a series Landy was like to steer as new, then PS may not be necessary.
