That's the spring loaded "button" the yellow knob in a series. It engages 4x4 in high range, the other lever is hi and low (red) I got confused the first time I jumped in my series My Series 3 ProjectMy Series 3 Project

Sorry I re read the question do you mean the transfer case??

Yep, if you look there are 2 other levers/rods - there's a thin one right next to the gear level and a thicker one further out - these are part of the standard LR transfer case which is grafted to the back of the box.

Ok, just spent half an hour doing a visual assessment of the top half of the 186. Plan is to use this and the cabstar box in the car if the engine doesn’t need major work as it will be quicker and cheaper to move the project along. Rocker cover off, pretty clean in here.

Head off, and I’m a happy man so far - I suspected the engine had been rebuild at some stage, I was right - .060 pistons in it and good condition bores with no lip and plenty of crosshash visible. Flat top ACL Duralites no less. 👍

Valves in the head look ok - no obvious recession of any of them - I’ll bung some plugs back in it and do a kero test on the valves - if it doesn’t pour through, I’m not even going to touch the head, just clean it up and stick it back on. Some surface rust, not fussed on that.

Whipped the side covers off - all the lifters popped straight out - no mushrooming and virtually no wear. If the cam looks as good, I’ll use it as is.

So, pretty pleased here. Will get it I the engine stand and pull the sump and front cover to check bearings and cam gear, then I’ll make a shopping list - looks like I may only need gaskets, seals and a tin of paint to bring this back to life. 👍

Yeah, I get where you’re coming from, but it won’t happen. This is a stop gap to get it on the road quicker and cheaper so not pulling the pistons or spending money internally. If it was stuffed, I’d continue on with the LR6 engine. I don’t need it to be brand new, it’ll get new gaskets and a coat of paint. It’s by far the best second hand red motor I’ve ever seen - I’ve rebuilt about a dozen of these so know then backwards. Cam gear will be replaced if it’s a fibre unit, I’ll pull a main and big end bearing to check them, but unless they’re stuffed which I doubt, they’ll go straight back on, button it up and bolt the whole lot in the chassis. 👍

I might catch Whitehillbilly then. 😉

Yeah, he’s gone a bit quiet - he has before though and come back swinging. Hopefully I’ll get a few things done here before he comes back so he gets a bit of a scare. 😁
