    Series 3 petrol tank question

I have just removed the petrol tank of my 77 SWB landrover.

It is a stepped tank, but all the tanks I see for sale do not have the part under the floor????

The tanks are a rectangular shape ????

    Thanks

    Craig

Not sure exactly what the question is but there are two possible tanks in the Series 3, one is 11 Gallons and is a rectangle, the other is 16 Gallons and has the step. Outriggers for the forward mounting are in a different spot as well. They can be changed over but both types are usually available aftermarket.

    Hi Tim

Thanks, I have the 16 Gallon tank, but, what was worrying me was the fact that I could not find the 16 gallon after market tank on some of the sites?

I bought one through FWD motors here in Brisbane a while back. I have also seen them on evilbay from time to time from other sellers. Second hand ones may be available if you put up a wanted add on here, the HoHars may have one for instance.

    Cheers,

Thanks Tim, did they make the stepped tank for a while then ??? also it looks like I will have to move the outrigger back to support the shorter tank?

As far as I know the 16g tank was an option from series 2 on but I don't know what vehicles it was fitted to standard. Both my Games have the 16. Yes the outrigger has to be moved to change. There is no benefit in clearance having the smaller tank so I can't see any reason not to stay with the larger one really.

I Agree Tim, hopefully I can find a 16 gallon one to replace my tank that has rusted away either side of the outriggers.... if not ... can i easily fit a secondary tank ?

    FWD Motors Yeronga

    Hello from Brisbane.

The last time I checked (earlier in the year) FWD still had one or two of the larger tank in stock.

4-Wheel Drives in Melbourne get them made to order.

The other option is you could take yours to a sheetmetal fabricator and they could quote for making a new one.

Never saw the 16 gal tank as an original fitting in a SIIa (yes I was an enthusiast back then too) and the first of the SIII had the 10 gal as well, so my belief is that the 16 gal is unique to SIII but retrofitted to SII/SIIa (I did it to my SIIA wagon, but they were special 15gal underseat fill made by PMC in about 1976).

BTW: the 16 gal tank is an Oz PMC design, so unlikely that Britpart would make them.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
